Main Club meeting

Main speaker: Greg Keighery, DEC Scientist and Botanist speaking on:-
Weeds: Our problem, other people's Wildflowers

Weeds are a major problem in natural and agricultural systems over our entire planet. World-wide over 18,000 plants have been recorded as behaving as weeds and over 1,200 are recorded as weedy in Western Australia. Invasive species such as weeds pose one of the greatest threats to biodiversity and are a major cost to agricultural production.
However, before people started agriculture there were no weeds, only native wildflowers, so what is a weed? How many and what types do we have? Where have they come from? What will happen in the future with changing climates? Finally given how many weeds there are, how do we prioritise what weeds to action for biodiversity?

Greg has spent over 30 years documenting the Weeds of Western Australia. He will tell us why this is a fascinating and very useful objective for a Survey Scientist.
