Bold Park Bioblitz

23 October 2021, 8:30 am-11:00 am

To tie-in with the Great Southern Bioblitz weekend happening across the southern hemisphere from October 22nd-25th, we’ll be taking a walk through the bushland of Bold Park and using the iNaturalist app to record what animals and plants can be found there.

If group size allows we’ll break into smaller groups for those wishing to focus on plants, birds, invertebrates, etc. This excursion is suitable for families with children and young naturalists are encouraged to attend.

Meet at the Camel Lake carpark at the southern end of Perry Lakes Drive in City Beach. Additional parking is available at nearby Perry Lakes Reserve if required. Bring a hat, waterbottle and camera and/or smartphone. The walk trails are moderately hilly so wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and bring water to drink.

Please note there are no toilets in Bold Park, with the nearest facilities across the road at Perry Lakes Reserve.

The Great Southern Bioblitz aims to highlight the immense diversity of life that can be found across the southern hemisphere during springtime, as well as engaging the public to explore and learn more about nature in their area.

Anyone can participate by using their phone or camera to photograph wild animals and plants from your garden, local park or nearby bushland reserves and submitting your images via the iNaturalist app or website. iNaturalist makes the species data available to researchers to learn about the biodiversity of an area, including discovering new species and extending the known range of others.

Use your smartphone to photograph and upload sighting to iNaturalist

Before the event we encourage you to create an iNaturalist account and, if using a mobile device to take your pictures, download the iNaturalist app from the Apple or Google Play stores. Practise submitting a sighting beforehand by following the guides and video tutorials from the iNaturalist website.

The team from the Great Southern Bioblitz also have videos to help you get the most out of your submissions. See their Youtube channel for their Introduction to iNaturalist and Advanced Tips videos.
