DESCRIPTION:🖤 Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre Walk – Kaarakin\, Martin\n\nplease RSVP or scroll down to pay \n\nJoin members of the Darling Range Branch as we visit the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre at Kaarakin plays a vital role in protecting some of Western Australia’s most iconic and endangered wildlife. Located in the Perth Hills\, the Centre is dedicated to the rescue\, rehabilitation\, and conservation of black cockatoos and other native species impacted by climate change\, habitat loss\, and urban development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4\n\n\n\nVolunteers at the Centre currently care for around 200 animals\, many of which would otherwise be at serious risk of injury\, displacement\, or extinction. These passionate volunteers work year-round to provide expert care\, safe rehabilitation\, and long-term conservation solutions for wildlife that have lost their natural homes. \nDuring this guided walk\, participants will learn how the Centre supports black cockatoos by recreating and protecting essential nesting\, foraging\, and roosting sites—critical habitats that have been severely reduced or degraded over recent decades due to urban sprawl and land clearing. The walk offers valuable insight into the daily work of the volunteers and the innovative strategies being used to help these birds survive and thrive. \nHuman activity has had a massive and detrimental impact on black cockatoo populations in recent decades. Habitat loss and fragmentation remain the greatest threats facing all three species of black cockatoos in south-west Western Australia. SUMMARY:Yunderup Bat Survey
DESCRIPTION:It is time again to go to Coolenup Island to continue with our monitoring efforts from the comforts of our field studies centre. Club members have been carrying out flora and fauna surveys on this island since 1967. \n\n\n\n\nYunderup Field Studies Centre \n\n\n\n\nThis weekend we will carry out flora and fauna surveys on the island\, including a survey of bats with Ry Beaver. We will go on a night stalk on Friday and Saturday night to listen for\, and record bats so bring a head torch. The following mornings we will analyse our recordings. \n\n\n\n\nGoulds Wattled Bat \n\n\n\nMeet: at South Yunderup Jetty 11 am on Friday 17 October or 10 am on Saturday the 18th. Other arrangements can be made on request. Club members are welcome to come for one or both days. Note there is no transport off the island after 5pm. \n\n\n\nBring: Members and visitors staying overnight need to bring bedding/sleeping bag and pillowcase\, food and drinks\, mosquito repellent\, camera\, head torch or flash light\, etc. \n\n\n\nRSVP required: Please RSVP through our website if you intend to stay overnight or come along for one day (Saturday). Up to 8 people can sleep at the field studies centre (3 rooms with 2 bunk beds each: 4 beds are reserved for the 2 excursion leaders and 2 care-takers). There is a 4-ring hotplate to cook meals\, and a fridge. \n\n\n\nCosts: day visit free for members\, $5 for visitors\, members $10 p/n for overnight stay\, visitors $15 p/n (to assist with ongoing expenses).

SUMMARY:Bird-watching at Lesmurdie Brook with the Darling Range Branch. Leaders: Rachel & Mike Green
DESCRIPTION:Excursion Timing: 9.30am start -11am finish.\n\nExcursion Meeting Place: We will meet at the very top car park on Falls Road\, the FIRST car park as you drive down Falls Road from Lesmurdie. It is called Terrace Carpark on Google maps. If you have reached the Falls\, you have gone too far. Look for the DRB Nats signs.\n \nPlease note there are no toilet facilities on the walk\, but there are some close to the Falls. Bring your binoculars and wear solid footwear.\n\n\nLeaders: Renowned naturalists Rachel and Mike Green.\nThis will be a bird-watching excursion around the Upper Lesmurdie Brook. The leaders have been conducting a bird survey over the past year around the brook.\n\nThe walk is relatively easy but it is a gravel path and sometimes uneven\, so not accessible for wheelchairs. There is one very short steep section; the rest is relatively flat. There will be water in the brook and some of the local birds will be nesting. Red-tailed Black Cockatoos\, Grey Fantails\, Australian Ring-neck Parrots\, Striated Pardalotes and others have been seen nesting in the area during the survey period.\n\nPlease bring your own water as there is none on site. Toilets are available further down the road\, and there are BBQ tables for lunch. Note the weather\, and bring suitable footwear and clothing.\nBinoculars\, and a pen and paper to record sightings may be useful. Mobile phone reception is variable.\n\nPlease note there are only 20 places available.\n\n

SUMMARY:Long Range Excursion - Westonia
DESCRIPTION:The Club has been invited to visit the property of Bush Blocks Guardians in Westonia adjacent to Chiddarcooping Nature Reserve (western side). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a wide variety of landscapes: large granite outcrops and slabs with shallow gnammas\, large tors and a very unique and extensive mini mogote field; a long and high breakaway with many caves and ochre patches; several water courses set in a wide variety of vegetation types.  \n\n\n\n(Photo by Peter Ewing). \n\n\n\n\nThere are active malleefowl nests and we can visit a range of Aboriginal heritage stone placements and a dolerite dyke tool-making site. We will also learn about the revegetation progress and methods being used\, about some of the checkered history of the property’s owners and use\, about the long-term wildlife monitoring\, and we will go for walks on the property\, and drives/walks in Chiddarcooping Nature Reserve. \n\n\n\nOther activities anticipated are carrying out flora surveys and spending a couple of days at Baladjie Rock. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are interested in participating in the Long Range Excursion\, please RSVP as soon as possible below. SUMMARY:Spotlighting Excursion to Pinnaroo & Craigie Bushland
DESCRIPTION:Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park Cemetery\, then over to Craigie Bushland \nBring: Headtorch (torch is ok)\, Mossie Repellent\, Snacks & water\, Enclosed Shoes \nMeet at 5pm at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park Cemetery off Whitfords Ave to see the many kangaroos that live within the grounds. \nPark by the lake (first turn off roundabout then first left – directions in link). \n \nWe will watch the plentiful Western grey kangaroos before moving the cars over to Craigie Bushland (Google Maps Location) which is encompassed by a predator proof fence. \nWe will move cars to \nCraigie Bushland is found just off Whitfords Ave\, Craigie behind the Craigie Leisure Centre and managed by the City of Joondalup. \nThe reserve encompasses 56ha\, of which 42ha has a predator free fence. The fence was put up in 2010 and 3 years later 43 Quenda (Isoodon fusciventer) were reintroduced to the reserve.  We will walk on mostly level gravel tracks by night for around an hour. \n \n  \nSee my blog of one of my previous visits – Ry’s blog \nWe should see plenty of wolf spiders\, other night time critters and hopefully Quenda & Brush tailed possums.  I will have a thermal camera and bat detector as well. \n  \nContact Ry ryber1@gmail.com or 0439994338 if needed.

DESCRIPTION:Dive into the fascinating history of Australia’s oldest shipwrecks. The WA Shipwrecks Museum is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere. Steeped in history\, the museum galleries house hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along WA’s treacherous coastline\, including the original timbers from Batavia (wrecked in 1629)\, the de Vlamingh Dish\, and also countless artefacts from the Dutch shipwrecks Zuytdorp\, Zeewijk and Vergulde Draeck. \n\n\n\nImage courtesy WA Shipwrecks Museum \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there: There is nearby paid car parking and it is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and bus terminus. \n\n\n\nMeet: At 10.30 am\, outside the Museum entrance. Please be aware that the WA Shipwrecks Museum does not have cloaking facilities or bag storage areas. As a consequence\, luggage and bags should not be taken into the Museum.  \n\n\n\nAn introduction to the Museum will be given by the volunteer guides. This will take approximately 45 minutes. SUMMARY:Ollie Worrell Reserve\, High Wycombe  "Sit and stand bird watching excursion and bird photography mentoring"
DESCRIPTION:DRB Excursion: Leaders\, renowned Naturalists Rachel and Mike Green \nOllie Worrell Reserve in High Wycombe has a permanent standing lake with many bird species. E-bird has recorded 84 species of birds there. Our excursion leaders\, Mike and Rachel\, have been visiting the reserve regularly since November 2024 and have been impressed with the different bird species they have seen. There are even two birds on the E-bird list they have never seen anywhere. They have seen a Reed Warbler’s nest with chicks\, Dusky Moorhen with chicks\, a Great Cormorant\, a group of Hardheads\, Musk Ducks\, a Darter and several other birds of interest. \nThe opportunity to walk around the lake is limited\, but some seats are supplied\, and they are excellent places to observe the lake\, the island\, and the extensive reeds. People can also bring their own chairs. It is near Abernethy Road\, so traffic can be noisy\, but on the opposite side of the lake\, where we will predominantly be focused\, it is quieter. \nThis excursion will be ideal for beginner bird-watchers and those with moderate experience. Mike is an experienced bird watcher and will provide help with bird identification and sightings. Rachel is an amateur bird photographer and will be available to help people learn some extra techniques for bird photography. This will be ideal for bird photography beginners or those amateurs who want to improve the bird pictures they get. It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have. \nThere is a flat concrete path around the best part of the lake\, providing access for those with walkers\, wheelchairs\, disabilities\, etc. \nPlease note that there are no facilities\, and car parking is available at Mathew Gibney Catholic School next door or on Worrell Avenue. We will meet at the oval entrance next to the Worrell Avenue reserve\, off Abernethy Road. \nWe anticipate having several visitors from Mike’s bird workshops attending from the local area. \nBring your binoculars. Watch out for the Weather and wear suitable clothing and shoes.\n\n9.30 am – 11 am.

SUMMARY:NSB's Re-enactment of First Excursion : Lake Joondalup
DESCRIPTION:The Wanneroo and District Branch held its first excursion on 31 March 1985. It was to Neil Hawkins Park. Not long after\, Noelene Goodsell\, wife of the inaugural president\, used her position as a school teacher to involve the Wanneroo Primary School in planning a Nature Trail along the shore of Lake Joondalup. \nOur re-enactment will take us from the park to the Yellagonga Scenic Lookout and beyond. There won’t be too many wildflowers but hopefully lots of birds and maybe a turtle or two. \nPrize for anyone in early 1980s dress. Guys\, how quickly can you grow a mullet! \nComfortable footwear and clothes suitable for the weather. SUMMARY:Darwin Day - Snorkelling in Coogee
DESCRIPTION:Charles Darwin’s birthday\, which falls on 12 February\, is generally used to highlight Darwin’s contributions to science and to promote science in general. To commemorate his achievements\, the Club will head to Coogee this year\, to go snorkelling around the Omeo wreck and the maritime trail\, and discover and learn about the underwater biodiversity at this location. RSVP required for this event. \n\n\n\nA School of Rough Bullseye (Pempheris klunzingeri)\n\n\n\nThe Omeo wreck is located very close to the shore at Coogee Beach\, mostly submerged and literally covered with marine growth. Anybody interested in the maritime history of the wreck can navigate to the WA Museum website (museum.wa.gov.au/maritime-archaeology-db/wrecks/omeo) as it has some interesting information. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the stairs on Socrates Parade going to the beach where the Omeo Wreck is located. Please note this is a very popular snorkelling and swimming site and parking nearby might be difficult. Leave plenty of time to be there at the starting time. The excursion is suitable for all ages and levels of snorkelling competence. Water depth varies between 0.5 m to 5 m. \n\n\n\nBring: snorkelling gear (mask\, snorkel\, fins)\, sun protection\, towel\, drinking water; optional a floating device\, underwater camera\, fish and or marine life ID book. We will go to a nearby cafe for refreshments afterwards but you can bring your own as well.

SUMMARY:GOLLY WALK: CONTINUING OUR BURNS BEACH TO FREMANTLE RAMBLE
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Muderup Rocks. Town of Cottesloe \nThis year we will depart from the norm and skip the couple of kilometres that would have taken us from Swanbourne to Cottesloe. Instead we will start our walk at Muderup Rocks at the southern end of Cottesloe Beach and walk to the beach opposite the Old Cable Station \nOur guides will be Sue Conlan from Friends of Mosman Park Bushland and Mike Gregson from the Naturalists’ Club. We will start by observing some of the geological features of the rocks and learning the significance of the rocks to the Noongar people. Further along the beach we can explore the beach wrack and look for the osprey and other birds that frequent the area. Mike will also point out the spot on the reef where he has seen a sea horse. Our walk will conclude with a talk about the history of the old cable station.  From there we will organise a shuttle back to our starting point and then drive to the Secret Garden for morning tea. \nOur meeting place will be the lawn opposite the western end of Forrest St\, Cottesloe. \nThe walk will be a mixture of walking on the beach and on made footpaths.  Please note there are no toilets along the way. As this is our last walk of the year please bring a plate to share. \nWe are almost in sight of the finish line! Just a couple of more years and we will be there.

DESCRIPTION:Location – Bushland around Collins Rd (southern side of Brookton Highway) \n\n\n\nGetting there: From the metro area\, travel south-east along the Brookton Highway. Collins Rd is on the right hand side of the road\, approximately 60km from the Albany highway turnoff near Armadale\, or 48km from Canning Road. From Brookton\, it is approximately 50km west of town. \n\n\n\nMeet – In Collins Rd\, ~500m from corner of Brookton Hwy.   \n\n\n\nCollins Rd is a beautiful area of Wandoo woodland\, 114 species of birds have been listed for this site\, as well as about 30 species of orchids\, not to mention many other wildflowers. \n\n\n\nJohn Cresp\, Birdlife WA member\, will lead the search for birds and Mike Gregson will lead the search for wildflowers. SUMMARY:Centenary Excursion to Dryandra National Park
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 100-year Anniversary\, we will visit Dryandra woodland\, including a visit to Barna Mia. Dryandra woodland is the largest remnant of native vegetation in the western Wheatbelt and well known and appreciated by our Club.  \n\n\n\n\nDryandra is home to magnificent trees and spectacular wildflowers in spring. The open eucalypt woodlands of white-barked wandoo and powderbark covered much of the Wheatbelt before it was cleared for farming. Thickets of rock sheoak and kwongan heath provide habitat for several of Dryandra’s rare species. \n\n\n\n\nWe might also see nocturnal wildlife\, some of the 24 mammal\, 98 bird and 41 reptile species that are all known to call Dryandra home\, including Western Australia’s state mammal emblem\, the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus). \n\n\n\nWe have booked four cottages at the Lions Village\, which will accommodate 16 to 20 people. Booking is required to ensure a bed in the cottages. The costs for two nights shared accommodation will depend on how many people attend (approx. $65 for 2 nights). Other members are welcome to join us for the whole or part of the excursion but would need to arrange their own accommodation (two campsites are available). Cost for a visit to Barna Mia will be around $25. \n\n\n\nTo book a place in one of the cottages\, a non-refundable deposit of $15 is needed to hold your place. Money should be paid into the Club’s bank account as soon as possible\, with reference Dryandra excursion (BSB 633000 Acc 168641629). SUMMARY:Exclusive Field trip to Yanchep National Park (orchid specific) by DRB
DESCRIPTION:DRB is heading out of the hills to hold a field trip in Yanchep National Park. \nWe are holding this member field trip as part of our 50th anniversary events.   Despite the sandy soils\, Yanchep’s coastal woodlands support a diverse range of trees including banksia\, tuart\, marri\, stunted jarrah\, sheoak and small pockets of paperbark. During spring\, many native flora species including kangaroo paws and catspaws are in flower. \nShelley Campbell will share her knowledge of orchids and will lead the group along the 2.6 km Woodlands Walk trail\, a Class 2 trail (see pdf). \nVisitors and members are invited to explore the trail with Shelley\, finding and identifying some of our fabulous spring orchids. \nThere is a daily fee of $17 per vehicle to enter Yanchep NP\, or you can purchase a Yanchep NP annual park pass online \nPark Pass\nfor $30 to give you free entry to Yanchep NP for a year. \nDetails of meeting point to be confirmed on booking. Please consider the weather and wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Hat and Water essential. \nOrchid identification books will be available to use. \nMeeting place: go straight through the roundabout after the entry station until they see a large carpark on the left and we will meet in the carpark. SUMMARY:In Rica Erickson's Footsteps - Excursion to Rica Erickson Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Rica Erickson was an Australian naturalist\, member of our Club\, a botanical artist\, historian\, author and teacher. As a schoolteacher living north of Toodyay\, she spent her time studying the wonders of the bush. The Rica Erickson Nature Reserve\, located north-east of Bindoon\, about 100 kilometres from Perth\, is named in her honor as she was instrumental in conserving this bushland in the 1960. It is appropriate that for our Centenary\, we follow in Rica’s footsteps and visit this reserve for an excursion. Early spring is the best time to see the wildflowers in this reserve. \n\n\n\nMeet: 9.15 am at the public toilets on Gray Road in Bindoon\, just past the Bindoon Bakehouse & Cafe. Total distance approx. 150km.
