SUMMARY:Long May They Grace our Skies - Black Cockatoo Research and Conservation 
DESCRIPTION:Main Club Meeting Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, UWA\, Clifton Street Nedlands \n\nMurdoch University’s Black Cockatoo Conservation Management research team has been undertaking research on Western Australia’s black cockatoos over the last 18 years. The health research on Carnaby’s cockatoos aims to better understand the potential role of disease as a threatening process for this species. Over the last 12 years\, the research team has been tracking all three species of black cockatoos using GPS and ARGOS satellite telemetry\, which enables the team to obtain flock movement\, behavioural and ecological data across different spatial scales. The talk will discuss the team’s research on black cockatoos\, as well as the applications of the findings of this research to the Keep Carnaby’s Flying – Ngoolarks Forever project\, a large-scale community engagement project support by Lotterywest from 2022-2024.\n\nProfessor Kris Warren from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University has worked in the field of wildlife\, zoological and conservation medicine for over 20 years. Staff and students in the Conservation Medicine Program undertake research on the health of threatened wildlife species within ecological contexts\, throughout Australia and internationally\, in order to assist recovery efforts to conserve these species. Professor Warren was appointed as a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine in the Specialty of Wildlife Population Health in 2011\, and as a Member of the Zoological Parks Authority Board for Perth Zoo in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:DRB Presents: Courtney Butterworth – Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Response \nNote: no RSVP required. \nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell. \nSpeaker: \nCourtney Butterworth \nTopic: \n \nPolyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Response \nPolyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB\, Euwallacea fornicatus) is a small beetle native to Southeast Asia that tunnels into the trunks\, stems and branches of trees and plants. \nThis beetle is highly invasive and attacks a wide range of plant species\, with over 500 documented globally to have been affected. \nDPIRD is responding to a detection of this invasive pest in the Perth metropolitan area and has implemented a Quarantine Area (QA). DESCRIPTION:Join Jasper as he delivers an entomological anthology style talk detailing topics of Katydid comparisons\, Odonatan inventions\, metamorphic memories and other such insect musings.\nJasper Dean is the current Secretary of the WA Insect Study Society. He is currently studying Conservation Biology and English Literature (double major) at UWA.\n\nThe photos show (1) a leaf katydid in Jasper’s backyard and (2) a dragonfly naiad from the Wildlife Show last year\, both photographed by Jasper.\n\nThis main talk will be followed by a short focus from recent Serventy Award winner\, Brodie O’Breza on their special interest in marine science.

DESCRIPTION:Mike Robinson and Carmel Ballinger from the Friends of Upper Lesmurdie Falls will talk will be about the work that the Friends group has done in Upper Lesmurdie Falls\, with photos of the changes that have been achieved. \nMike and Rachel Green led an excursion to the area in September and have made the following observations: \nRed-tailed Black Cockatoos\, Grey Fantails\, Australian Ring-neck Parrots\, Striated Pardalotes and more have been seen nesting in the area.\n\nIt is a pretty area\, predominantly Marri and Jarrah woodland with typical understorey. Unfortunately there have been quite a few vegetation deaths in the heatwaves but the birds continue and there are dense sets of reeds along some sections of the brook.\n\nThe area is looked after by a superb and very active group: The Friends of Upper Lesmurdie Falls\, who are weeding the area\, propagating plants to rehabilitate the bush\, and adding facilities. They provide seating at key points along the walk as well as signage explaining some of the indigenous perspective on the natural history.\nPlus: \n\nKids’ talk – one of our younger members will be giving a 5-minute talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8-minute “Boffins” talk. SUMMARY:WA leads the pack: The natural history of Western Australia’s islands\, and comparisons with other islands of Australia.
DESCRIPTION:There are about 3500 islands in WA\, which is more than any other Australian jurisdiction. All are in\npublic ownership\, and almost all south of the Kimberley are managed by a single government\nagency\, and almost all Kimberley islands are held under native title. This is a situation unique in the world.\nPresenters Andrew Burbidge and Ian Abbott’s lecture is arranged in two parts. First\, how islands differ from the mainland; why\nthey are interesting; a brief account of some biological curiosities; and an outline of the natural\nfactors that have led to changes in insular biotas. The second part is about nature conservation on\nislands\, with a focus on WA\, and impacts of invasive species on native mammals; the management\nactions taken to minimise extinctions on islands\, and the role of islands in conserving species that\nare threatened on mainland Australia. \nDr. Andrew A Burbidge AO\nAndrew is a conservation biologist who worked for state government conservation agencies for 33\nyears and has since been continuing this work. His main research areas include/included biological\nsurvey and conservation reserve design and acquisition; island survey\, biosecurity and\nmanagement; control of invasive species; Aboriginal oral history of mammals and fire; and\nthreatened species conservation\, especially mammals.\nAndrew is chair of the WA Threatened Species Scientific Committee and the Barrow Island Gorgon\nGas Development Quarantine Expert Panel. \nIan Abbott spent most of his career as a research scientist in the WA Public Service (1979-2014).\nSince retiring he has continued some of this work and ventured into new subjects. These include\nisland and mainland ecology and evolution in WA and beyond; ecological study of Jarrah\, Banksia\ngrandis\, and the forest avifauna; Noongar fire regimes and their names for bird and mammal\nspecies; and mammal extinction in WA. \nBoth presenters are widely published. \nThere will also be a focus talk from Daniel Heald on fossil insects. And Paul Doughty will talk to us about the upcoming FrogID Week (Nov 7-16). \nMeeting begins at 7.30pm at the Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, University of Western Australia. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Ian Barlow – The Crazy Bushman (AKA the Turtle Man of Perth); Wildlife Photographer\, Educator & Citizen Scientist \nTopic: Freshwater Turtles: “Showcasing species in need” \n    \nIan will be providing a general information session about the South-western Snake-necked turtle (Chelodina oblonga). The information that he will be presenting comes from the results of his observations of oblong turtles in the wild and the threats and obstacles they face in an ever-changing environment\, due to urbanisation and climate change. \nIan will also have all his educational resources on display as well as information about the 1 Million Turtles project whom he volunteers with\, and the TurtleSAT app\, used to contribute to the national citizen science project. This initiative is to help raise awareness and reveal the mysteries surrounding our freshwater turtles. Ian will have preserved specimens on display that will be safe to handle. \nThe aim of the session is to not only raise awareness about our local turtles and also get members of the community to be involved by asking questions or see how they can be involved by doing their small part towards effective conservation! \nPlus: \n\nFocus talk – A member or visitor will give an 8 minute focus talk.\n“Nature road show”. Alex George worked as a botanist at the Western Australian Herbarium for 21 years\, then edited the Flora of Australia based in Canberra for 12 years. Returning to Perth\, he did consulting work for some years but now enjoys the freedom of doing his own research and writing on various botanical projects. He was twice the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. Besides many books that he has edited and indexed\, he has written 17 books (some with joint authors) and published more than 500 scientific papers and articles for newsletters.\n\nTopic:\n\n\nThis talk will discuss what may be seen among our wildflowers at a season when few people venture out. And there is much to look at. During the dry summer\, some plants survive by reducing their internal activity\, shown by changes in foliage colour that can be very striking as it intensifies into autumn. Then\, within a few days of the first winter rains\, the same leaves revert to green and resume activity. Interestingly\, there are some plants that flower in autumn\, including Banksias – there are more of these to be seen in autumn than at any other season. We can also observe the first stages of how wildflowers respond to the bushfires that we know\, from the plants’ behaviour\, have been part of the natural environment here for millions of years.\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\nKids’ talk – one of your younger members will be giving a 5 minutes kids’ talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8 minutes Boffins’ talk. Tony Start will give a talk on “Tsunamis”\n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. SUMMARY:Amanda Bourne - 10 species in 10 years: a review of the Mt Gibson mammal restoration project 
DESCRIPTION:This talk to the main branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club will be given by Amanda Bourne who leads the conservation science program on four Australian Wildlife Conservancy wildlife sanctuaries in Western Australia. She will talk about the Mt Gibson Mammal Restoration Project\, which is on Badimia Country. \n\n\n\nThe team at Mt Gibson recently celebrated a significant conservation milestone\, with the release of the tenth locally-extinct mammal species\, the Western Quoll\, or Chuditch. Of the other nine species released during the past ten years\, both inside and outside a 7\,828 hectare feral predator-proof fenced area\, most are showing good signs of long-term viability. Amanda will give an overview of the field programs at Mt Gibson and discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with large\, complex\, landscape-scale conservation and restoration programs. \n\n\n\nIn her work\, Amanda coordinates a team of field-based ecologists conducting monitoring\, research\, animal translocations\, and strategic planning. Once thought extinct\, Night Parrots were rediscovered in 2013\, a century after the last sighting of a living individual.  it survives in remote arid regions\, hiding among dense spinifex and emerging only at night. Listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN\, it has become a symbol of both the fragility and resilience of Australia’s desert ecosystems. \nSpeaker:  \nOrnithologist Neil Hamilton has graciously agreed to provide us with the latest information on this fascinating\, enigmatic\, and emblematic bird of the Australian outback. \nFor nearly 30 years\, has devoted his career to caring for\, studying\, and protecting Australia’s unique birdlife and native fauna. His recent research has centred on the elusive Night Parrot\, combining fieldwork\, conservation\, and habitat protection in some of the country’s most remote landscapes. \nBefore retiring\, Neil spent over 25 years with the Department of Biodiversity\, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA)\, focusing on feral animal management\, wildlife trafficking prevention\, and fire management. He also founded Ghost Bird Consultancy\, inspired by his passion for preserving biodiversity and threatened species. \nIn addition to his government work\, Neil spent 28 years in the zoo industry and has contributed to numerous wildlife programs across Australia and overseas\, including captive breeding\, translocation\, and species recovery projects. \nNeil has also worked as a guide with Coates Wildlife Tours\, sharing his deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Australia’s wildlife (including Christmas Island and New Zealand)  and helping us/others appreciate natural world he has spent a lifetime studying. \n\n\nPlus:\n\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – A member will give a short talk.\n“Nature road show”. DESCRIPTION:We’re only just beginning to understand the complex role fungi play in our unique landscapes. But the more we learn\, the more we understand just how dependent we are on fungal diversity. \n\n\n\nRoz will talk about recent advances to assist Citizen Scientists to gain a better understanding of the fungi that we coexist with. Fungi do not just exist for us to eat! \n\n\n\nIt makes a difference if we understand what fungi do for our ecosystems and how land managers of all walks of life can work together with fungi. This gives us a better handle on what fungi can do for us as well as what we can do for them. \n\n\n\n\n\nRoz Hart and Sapphire McMullan Fisher have set up Fungi4Land\, working with Australian mycologists to gather and present in an understandable and workable format\, a guide to get a better understanding of how effective partnerships with local land managers\, flora and fauna can work in favour of the environment we live in.
