DESCRIPTION:🖤 Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre Walk – Kaarakin\, Martin\n\nplease RSVP or scroll down to pay \n\nJoin members of the Darling Range Branch as we visit the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre at Kaarakin plays a vital role in protecting some of Western Australia’s most iconic and endangered wildlife. Located in the Perth Hills\, the Centre is dedicated to the rescue\, rehabilitation\, and conservation of black cockatoos and other native species impacted by climate change\, habitat loss\, and urban development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4\n\n\n\nVolunteers at the Centre currently care for around 200 animals\, many of which would otherwise be at serious risk of injury\, displacement\, or extinction. These passionate volunteers work year-round to provide expert care\, safe rehabilitation\, and long-term conservation solutions for wildlife that have lost their natural homes. \nDuring this guided walk\, participants will learn how the Centre supports black cockatoos by recreating and protecting essential nesting\, foraging\, and roosting sites—critical habitats that have been severely reduced or degraded over recent decades due to urban sprawl and land clearing. The walk offers valuable insight into the daily work of the volunteers and the innovative strategies being used to help these birds survive and thrive. \nHuman activity has had a massive and detrimental impact on black cockatoo populations in recent decades. Habitat loss and fragmentation remain the greatest threats facing all three species of black cockatoos in south-west Western Australia. DESCRIPTION:Charles Darwin’s birthday\, which falls on 12 February\, is generally used to highlight Darwin’s contributions to science and to promote science in general. To commemorate his achievements\, the Club will head to Mettams Pool for a snorkelling event. You can expect to see marine fishes\, see anemones\, crabs and sea stars as well as seaweeds and sea grasses.RSVP required for this event.Time: 9 amWhere: Mettams Pool (Marmion Marine Park)\, 276 West Coast Drive\, North Beach.Meeting point: At the Mettams Pool carpark on the northern side of the beach. Extra parking is available in car park just north of Bennion St if there are no spaces along West Coast Highway. Walking distance approx. 200m.Bring: swimming and snorkelling gear\, towel\, drinking water\, sunscreen\, hat etc.\, identification books and charts.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science is for everyone! - using iNaturalist to advance knowledge of our environment
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to add to the stock of knowledge of our wonderful local environment? Join the ‘citizen scientist’ movement and learn to use iNaturalist! \nIn this digital era\, we know that there are now better ways to share our nature observations than writing them down and filing the lists in a cupboard!  Most of us use our mobile phone to snap images of plants and animals. It is but a small step to upload them to the internet database iNaturalist Australia so the wider public (including scientists) can benefit from our observations. \nThe Club has had projects on the iNaturalist Australia since 2020\, as a way to share our observations with the wider community. We do this partly to discuss what we have observed\, partly to get expert opinions on identification\, and ultimately to contribute to the Atlas of Living Australia. \nIn this workshop you will learn from our experts how to set up the iNaturalist app on your phone and how to use it on your laptop. You will also learn how to make observations and how to search iNaturalist to identify what you’ve observed. \nPlease bring your smartphone and/or laptop / tablet and be knowledgeable of passwords to enable you to download from the app store (if not done before the workshop).
