DRB Nats: Anything you want to know about local birds!

20 February, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

DRB Nats: Anything you want to know about local birds!

We are kicking off the year learning about birds. Following our opening DRB Nats meeting we follow-up with another of Rachel and Mike Green’s popular bird workshops, this time in the Shire of Mundaring’s Civic Centre.

It will help you understand, attract and identify the birds in your garden, street and reserve in the Shire of Mundaring specifically and the Perth Hills generally.

You will learn

  • How to identify the birds in your garden, street and reserve by knowing what the different birds look like, what their calls are, how they nest, and the features to look for when identifying them. This will include a special segment on how to tell the difference between all those challenging “LBBs” – little brown birds.
  • What the different birds eat and how to provide food and shelter for them.
  • How to attract birds to your garden, and what plants and conditions the different birds need.
  • How to use birdbaths, bird perches, bird boxes, bird apps, bird books, binoculars, and more. There will be bird books and other equipment on display.
  • You will be shown many excellent photographs and videos of the birds so you can practise identifying them and there will be brand new bird photos and stories, as well as photographs specifically taken in the Shire of Mundaring. A bird list of all the birds seen in one hour at the Civic Centre will be provided to help you start your own bird list too. You can bring photographs of birds you want identified.
  • Be left feeling inspired to care for and get to know the birds in your garden, street or reserve.

Speakers:
Rachel and Mike Green are mad keen on birds and are long-standing members of the Darling Range Branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club. They used to have a 6-acre property on which they developed a bird habitat garden and recorded 69 different species of birds. Now they are doing the same thing on a quarter acre block and have planted over 130 native plants, and are recording their progress and the birds that arrive. They promise not to be boring! We received great feedback from their last workshop, so don’t miss them as their workshops book out.

Time: 9am-12noon.

Date: Saturday 20th February 2021.

Place: Civic Centre, Shire of Mundaring offices, 7000 Great Eastern Highway, Mundaring WA 6073
