Great Southern Bio-Blitz 2020

26 September 2020

Members and friends are reminded the club has signed up to participate in the Great Southern Bio-Blitz to be held on Saturday 26 September.

What is the Great Southern Bio-Blitz? The Great Southern Bio-Blitz is a competition between cities or local government areas throughout the southern hemisphere to see who can record the greatest number of species. Everyone is a winner because it provides a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity.

Where is it being held? As this is the first year the club has competed we will start small. We have chosen an area in the City of Stirling bounded by the coast, Beach Road, Mitchell Freeway and Reid Hwy/North Beach Road (refer to attached map). This makes the Henderson Environment Centre at Star Swamp the ideal headquarters for the event. We will be recording species in three different habitats- coastal, bushland and a wetland.

When is it on? Again we have modified the time of the event to suit ourselves. Instead of recording over four days we will only record between 8:00am and 8:00pm on Saturday 26 September.

How do I participate? You are free to turn up at the Henderson Environment Centre, located at the end of Groat St, North Beach, at any time to sign up and to be given instructions by one of the organisers. Or if you prefer you can choose one or more of the set 3 hour recording sessions which will be led by experts in a particular field.

Time                      Leader(s)                           Emphasis

8am-11am                     David Pike                          Insects

11am-2pm                     Mark Brundrett              Orchids

2pm-5pm                       Leanda Mason                 Spiders

5pm-8pm                       Bamfords (TBC)                Night walk/Frogs

Some people will be given checklists of species while others will be asked to photograph as many species as possible.

What happens to the data? All the recording will be loaded into the iNaturalist database using the iNaturalist app.. If you are familiar with this app you can input the data yourself into the Project name you will be given on the day. Instructions for uploading entries can be found at Using iNaturalist for the Great Southern BioBlitz video

What to bring? A camera, preferably with GPS capability but not essential; Binoculars if you are interested in birds; Your own cup – tea coffee, etc will be provided; Children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, friends, but please leave your dog(s) at home.

Wear clothes suitable for outdoor activities.
