SUMMARY:Discover the Birds of Broz Park Nature Walk with Rachel and Mike Green
DESCRIPTION:Discover the Birds of Broz Park Nature Walk \nwith Rachel and Mike Green \n \nPLEASE BOOK YOUR PLACE \nTo book for this event\, please go to the following website. Those that already booked using the RSVP on this website have been added into Eventbrite.  \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/discover-the-birds-of-broz-park-nature-walk-tickets-1984516289644?aff=oddtdtcreator \n  \n  \nDiscover the number one bird hot spot (by size) in the Helena Valley in the Shire of Mundaring and learn all about the birds you might see there. Join local bird enthusiasts\, Rachel and Mike Green\, as they lead you on a guided bird walk around the park and tell you about the birds\, how to recognise them\, where in the park you might see them and how they behave. \nRachel and Mike are the authors of the “Guide to the Birds of Broz Park”\, published by the Shire of Mundaring in 2025 and know the park well. They have surveyed the birds there over 80 times. They are also long-standing members of the Darling Range Branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club. \nWhich birds will you see? That is impossible to predict as it varies with the water levels but there have been at least 64 bird species recorded there\, from the tiny Black-fronted Dotterel and Weebill to the large Black Swan and Great Egret. A winter wetland attracts many other birds including Shovelers\, Spoonbills and Stilts. \nEveryone who attends will be given a free copy of the Broz Park book\, if you haven’t already got one. This will help you look for and identify the birds. Rachel and Mike may even put your bird identification skills to the test with a quiz to find specific birds they know are in the park that day. Of course you can use the book to help you! \nBroz Park has a sealed easy walking track all around its lake. It has a bird hide\, toilets\, trees\, native flowers\, BBQs\, seats with shelters\, a water fountain\, and of course\, the birds. The path is suitable for people with walking frames and wheelchairs\, although people may also walk over a grassy area. \nThe Shire of Mundaring supported by Natural Resource Management (NRM) and other organisations have invested a lot of time and work into an environmental restoration project at the Park. They are working to improve the health of the wetland\, e.g. by aeration of the water\, removing non-native fish species\, planting native rushes and sedges\, revegetating with local plant species\, educating the community\, and more. This is a great opportunity to see this important work. \nDate: Saturday 2nd May 2026. \nTime: Start 10am\, finish no later than 12 noon. \nAddress: 4 Parkview Gardens\, Helena Valley WA 6056. \nMeet at: Broz Park\, Park View Gardens\, Helena Valley. Take the roundabout off Helena Valley Road into Helena Valley Private Estate. There is ample free parking on Park View Gardens. \nWhat to bring: Bring binoculars. Also a hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, walking shoes (no thongs please) etc. according to the weather on the day. \nPeople are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and stay back afterwards. \nBookings are essential as numbers are limited. This is an event run by the Shire of Mundaring to which we have been invited. A link will be published on Eventbrite shortly. \nThis is a free event thanks to the Shire of Mundaring. \nIdeal for: People who are new to bird watching or experienced bird watchers who haven’t been to Broz Park before. Children aged 8 and above are welcome.

SUMMARY:Peter Ewing and Sam Lostrom: Expanding Remnant Bush in the Heavily Cleared Wheatbelt Bioregion
DESCRIPTION:Bush Blocks Guardians Inc. (BBG) was formed to facilitate purchasing land for conservation in the Wheatbelt\, which has undergone extensive clearing reducing most bush to small\, isolated remnants. In 2021 BBG purchased 666ha to be preserved and rehabilitated in the Eastern Wheatbelt. The block was selected as two of its boundaries border one of WA’s most important nature reserves and it supports a large diversity of habitats\, flora and vegetation. 200ha had been farmed which we are carefully revegetating using locally collected seed from about 50 species. We have professional ecologist members conducting systematic fauna and flora surveys to gain an understanding of baseline diversity. This will help determine effectiveness of efforts to rehabilitate cleared areas and control non-native species such as cats\, foxes and rabbits. We have also identified many First Nations heritage sites and quite unique granite rock structures. \n\n\n\nThis talk will briefly give an overview of how the group came together and some of our achievements\, and ecologist Sam Lostrom will detail our extensive fauna surveying program and plans for the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhite-fronted Honeyeater\n\n\n\nBorya garden on granite

SUMMARY:Serventy Memorial Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:Kerry will talk about establishing the WA Parks Foundation when she was Governor\, and the unique\, beautiful but threatened environment in Western Australia. She believes that there is an important role for organisations such as the WA Parks Foundation\, the WA Naturalists’ Club and others in encouraging understanding of\, and a love for\, our natural environment. This role is complemented by the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and the Salvado Trail that encourage people to hike as a way of experiencing nature\, including its healing potential. She will discuss how the WA Parks Foundation aims to work in collaboration with the other organisations\, both government and private. The theme of her talk will be drawn from Dr Seuss’s quote “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot\, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” \n\n\n\nThe Hon Kerry Sanderson AC was Governor of Western Australia from 2014 to 2018. She served as Edith Cowan University’s fourth Chancellor (2018-2021). Kerry is currently Chair St John of God Health Care and the WA Parks Foundation\, as well as being a patron of several charitable and community organisations. Prior to being appointed Governor\, Mrs Sanderson served as Chair or non-executive director of several organisations. \n\n\n\nKerry has been Agent General for Western Australia (2008 to 2011) and Chief Executive Officer of Fremantle Ports (1991 to 2008). She was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2016 and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by both the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University. In 2020 she received the award of Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). Kerry is especially proud to be a Co-Patron\, with Prof. Lyn Beazley\, of the WA Naturalists Club. \n\n\n\nDATE: Wednesday\, April 22 at 7.30 pm \n\n\n\nVENUE:- \n\n\n\n\n\nCOST: $25 Students: $15 \n\n\n\nORGANISERS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Serventy Memorial Fund is a memorial to the contribution by the Serventy family to the Western Australian Naturalists’ Club\, to assist and encourage young people in the study of natural history. The Serventy Memorial Lecture is the main source of funding for the Serventy Memorial Prizes for students awarded annually at the four WA universities.

SUMMARY:NSB: Cool Creatures of the Great Victoria Desert - Change of Venue
DESCRIPTION:Note. due to a double booking we have to change the venue. The meeting will now be held at the Undercroft Bridge Club\, Ron Chamberlain Drive\, Duncraig – park in the car park on the east side of the building.  \nCome a long and hear researcher Sarah Visser talk about some of the cool fauna she has found in the GVD. \nThe great Victoria Desert is one of the world’s most precious biodiversity hotspots – a special place that is like nowhere else in the world. The area is especially remarkable for its hardy and often elusive wildlife\, much of which is found nowhere else. Despite the harsh conditions\, it supports a myriad of mammals and a rich variety of reptiles\,  and birds especially adapted to survive with little water. These animals rely on deep burrows\, specialised diets\, and clever behaviour\, making the desert a stronghold of unique and resilient Australian fauna. \nAlso a short presentation by this year’s ECU Serventy Memorial Prize Winner\, Ellie Simpson. \nPhoto. SUMMARY:Roz Hart on Fungi For Land
DESCRIPTION:We’re only just beginning to understand the complex role fungi play in our unique landscapes. But the more we learn\, the more we understand just how dependent we are on fungal diversity. \n\n\n\nRoz will talk about recent advances to assist Citizen Scientists to gain a better understanding of the fungi that we coexist with. Fungi do not just exist for us to eat! \n\n\n\nIt makes a difference if we understand what fungi do for our ecosystems and how land managers of all walks of life can work together with fungi. This gives us a better handle on what fungi can do for us as well as what we can do for them. \n\n\n\n\n\nRoz Hart and Sapphire McMullan Fisher have set up Fungi4Land\, working with Australian mycologists to gather and present in an understandable and workable format\, a guide to get a better understanding of how effective partnerships with local land managers\, flora and fauna can work in favour of the environment we live in.

SUMMARY:Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre Walk – Kaarakin\, Martin
DESCRIPTION:🖤 Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre Walk – Kaarakin\, Martin\n\nplease RSVP or scroll down to pay \n\nJoin members of the Darling Range Branch as we visit the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre at Kaarakin plays a vital role in protecting some of Western Australia’s most iconic and endangered wildlife. Located in the Perth Hills\, the Centre is dedicated to the rescue\, rehabilitation\, and conservation of black cockatoos and other native species impacted by climate change\, habitat loss\, and urban development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4\n\n\n\nVolunteers at the Centre currently care for around 200 animals\, many of which would otherwise be at serious risk of injury\, displacement\, or extinction. These passionate volunteers work year-round to provide expert care\, safe rehabilitation\, and long-term conservation solutions for wildlife that have lost their natural homes. \nDuring this guided walk\, participants will learn how the Centre supports black cockatoos by recreating and protecting essential nesting\, foraging\, and roosting sites—critical habitats that have been severely reduced or degraded over recent decades due to urban sprawl and land clearing. The walk offers valuable insight into the daily work of the volunteers and the innovative strategies being used to help these birds survive and thrive. \nHuman activity has had a massive and detrimental impact on black cockatoo populations in recent decades. Habitat loss and fragmentation remain the greatest threats facing all three species of black cockatoos in south-west Western Australia. This event provides an opportunity to better understand these challenges\, learn what is being done to address them\, and discover how individuals and communities can contribute to conservation efforts. \n✨ A meaningful and educational experience for nature lovers\, conservation supporters\, and anyone passionate about protecting Western Australia’s unique wildlife \nRSVP booking is essential as payment will be required prior to the visit – $25 per guest – Naturalist Club Inc Darling Range\, BSB 633-000 number 209590967 or ring the office for Card Payment \nBranch is subsidising members\, please contact 0402272868  re:  payment or difficulties with bank account

SUMMARY:Amanda Bourne - 10 species in 10 years: a review of the Mt Gibson mammal restoration project
DESCRIPTION:This talk to the main branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club will be given by Amanda Bourne who leads the conservation science program on four Australian Wildlife Conservancy wildlife sanctuaries in Western Australia. She will talk about the Mt Gibson Mammal Restoration Project\, which is on Badimia Country. \n\n\n\nThe team at Mt Gibson recently celebrated a significant conservation milestone\, with the release of the tenth locally-extinct mammal species\, the Western Quoll\, or Chuditch. Of the other nine species released during the past ten years\, both inside and outside a 7\,828 hectare feral predator-proof fenced area\, most are showing good signs of long-term viability. Amanda will give an overview of the field programs at Mt Gibson and discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with large\, complex\, landscape-scale conservation and restoration programs. \n\n\n\nIn her work\, Amanda coordinates a team of field-based ecologists conducting monitoring\, research\, animal translocations\, and strategic planning. She has a strong focus on evidence-based decision-making in biodiversity conservation. \n\n\n\n\nWestern Quoll. Photo by Robin Sinclair of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

SUMMARY:DRB Presents: Alex George talks about Autumn in the bush
DESCRIPTION:DRB Presents: Alex George talks about Autumn in the bush\n\nNote: no RSVP required.\nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell.\n\n\nSpeaker:\n\n\nAlex George from Murdoch University. Alex George worked as a botanist at the Western Australian Herbarium for 21 years\, then edited the Flora of Australia based in Canberra for 12 years. Returning to Perth\, he did consulting work for some years but now enjoys the freedom of doing his own research and writing on various botanical projects. He was twice the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. Besides many books that he has edited and indexed\, he has written 17 books (some with joint authors) and published more than 500 scientific papers and articles for newsletters.\n\nTopic:\n\n\nThis talk will discuss what may be seen among our wildflowers at a season when few people venture out. And there is much to look at. During the dry summer\, some plants survive by reducing their internal activity\, shown by changes in foliage colour that can be very striking as it intensifies into autumn. Then\, within a few days of the first winter rains\, the same leaves revert to green and resume activity. Interestingly\, there are some plants that flower in autumn\, including Banksias – there are more of these to be seen in autumn than at any other season. We can also observe the first stages of how wildflowers respond to the bushfires that we know\, from the plants’ behaviour\, have been part of the natural environment here for millions of years.\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\nKids’ talk – one of your younger members will be giving a 5 minutes kids’ talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8 minutes Boffins’ talk. Tony Start will give a talk on “Tsunamis”\n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If we have time\, one of our experts will identify them or briefly talk about them\, or the person bringing them can talk about where they saw it\, etc. Photographs are particularly welcome\, as everyone can see them. If you wish to show a photograph please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. We have a dedicated email for this purpose” natclub@webco.com.au\nThing of the month / Things coming up next month: These two presentations are about things in nature happening this month and things coming up\, so if you have any photos or information\, send them to: natclub@webco.com.au\nDoor prizes: You could also be the lucky winner of a door prize. We make sure there are prizes for both members and visitors.\nRaffle: We will have a great raffle  – please raid your piggy bank for a bit more cash\, $5 for 3 tickets.\n\nTime: Please come at 7.15pm or earlier if you wish\, for a 7.30pm start as we start promptly. We are open from 6.45pm. We finish formal proceedings no later than 9.30pm.\nDonation: All this for only a donation of $3 per person for adult members ($0 for child members)\, and $5 per adult visitor and $1 per visiting child to help with the costs of running the club\, venue hire\, insurance and so on.  Please bring the right CASH to help us avoid long queues. Thanks. We do not have EFTPOS facilities yet.\nEntrance: It is a condition of entry that everyone signs in on arrival\, thank you.\nParking: Free parking right outside.\nWheelchair access: Everything is on one level.\nToilets: Are inside.\nBookings: No bookings required.\nSee you there for fabulous night.
