DESCRIPTION:AGM: Please note that the DRB branch AGM will be held at the beginning of this meeting prior to Jasper’s talk. \n\nNote: no RSVP required.\n\nSpeaker:\n\nJasper Dean\n\nTopic:\n   \n\nJasper gave a talk to the Main club of the WA Nats in November 2025. He has agreed to give another talk to our branch\, with some changes to suit our audience.\n\nHere is the review of his last talk posted on the WA Nats newsletter:\n\n\n“Our speaker was Jasper Dean. Jasper is the current secretary of the Perth Insect Study Society\, and is studying an unusual combination at UWA: Conservation Biology and English. During his gap year\, he worked at Kings Park as an Education Assistant. He enjoys making models of insects from recycled materials\, and the Bug Zoo in Canada is one of his favourite places in the world. After showing us his insect tattoos\, he delivered his talk in a light-hearted and entertaining way\, and his enthusiasm shone through.  \nIn Australia\, there are 3000 species of orthopterans\, or straight-winged insects. They make a loud noise by rubbing body parts together (stridulation). They are divided into the katydids and crickets (Ensifera) and the grasshoppers and locusts (Caelifera).  \nThe Ensifera have long\, hair-like antennae\, make their noise by rubbing their wings against their back legs\, and have their ears on their forelegs. In contrast\, the Caelifera have short antennae\, make their noise by rubbing their back legs together\, and have their ears on the side of the first abdominal segment.  \nKatydids are also called bush crickets\, especially in Australia\, although they are not the same as true crickets. (Hence the need for scientific nomenclature\, and Jasper explained some of the interesting etymology of those Latin names). Katydids are flattened laterally. Jasper showed us some that look like leaves\, and even some with holes and blemishes to make them resemble real leaves. One in 500 has a mutation that makes them bright pink! Katydids mostly eat plant material\, but some prey on insects. Some toss their faeces away to deter predators (Look out!). Lost your thermometer? You can use the chirping rate of katydids to determine the temperature. \nAnother group of insects is the Odonata. This order is divided into two major groups – the dragonflies\, which rest with their wings outstretched\, and the damselflies\, with wings folded along the body when at rest.  There are other differences as well\, such as where they lay their eggs.  Their immature stage is called a naiad\, which means an aquatic nymph stage. They live in water and are very well camouflaged.” \n\n\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – A member will give a short talk. No focus/ boffins talk due to AGM.  \n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If you wish to show a photograph\, please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. DESCRIPTION:Our Field Studies Centre is the perfect place to unwind and recharge your battery\, and learn something new. This time\, we will be teaching macro photography using your mobile phone\, and uploading to iNaturalist Australia if possible. Renowned phone photographer Sophie Xiang will share her secrets and teach us how to get beautiful photos using your phone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at South Yunderup Jetty 11 am on Friday the 16th or 9 am on Saturday the 17th. Other arrangements can be made on request. Club members are welcome to come for one or both days.  \n\n\n\nMembers staying overnight need to bring bedding/sleeping bag and pillowcase\, food and drinks\, insect repellent\, etc. Please RSVP if you intend to stay overnight or come along for one day (Saturday or Sunday). Up to 8 people can sleep at the field studies centre (3 rooms with 2 bunk beds\, [4 beds are reserved for the caretakers and organisers]). There is a 4 ring hotplate to cook meals and a microwave\, fridge.  \n\n\n\nCosts: $5 for day visit\, $15 for overnight stay (to assist with ongoing expenses). DESCRIPTION:This excursion will be led by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Byron Lamont AM.  A specialist in the ecology of the flora of the Darling Scarp and Western Australia in general\, Prof Lamont has published hundreds of papers over his long career and subsequent retirement. Prof. Lamont presented the Seventy Memorial Lecture in 2025. He is well known for his research on the ecology of native plants\, including responses to rehabilitation after mining.

SUMMARY:Cheryl Lohr on feral cat control
DESCRIPTION:Note: no RSVP required.\n\nSpeaker: Cheryl Lohr – DRB member\n\n\nCheryl originally hails from a farm in the wheatbelt and is now a Senior research scientist in the Animal Science Program at DBCA. She has an eclectic research history including everything from decision support\, stakeholder engagement\, software design\, and ecological modelling to testing contraceptives in brushtail possums.\nIn 2017 Cheryl took charge of the Rangelands restoration project in central WA. She chases boodies\, mala\, possums\, and golden bandicoots in circles trying to count them\, while also still trying to figure out how to eliminate the feral cats. She’s had great success with the first successful reintroduction of boodies to the open landscape! The main site where Cheryl works was known as Lorna Glen\, but after a huge amount of work with traditional owners\, volunteers\, and students the area is now the Matuwa Kurrara Kurrara\nNational Park. In recent years the job has grown again and you can now find Cheryl working to conserve threatened fauna almost anywhere in the Goldfields.\n\n\n\n\nTopic:\n\n\nCheryl will be giving a presentation on the history of Australia’s longest running feral cat control program\, the lessons learned\, and an accounting of the many threatened species that are showing strong signs of recovery on Matuwa Kurrara Kurrara National Park.\n\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – Tanya Marwood (member) will give a 10-min talk about a trip to Tasmania in Feb.\n“Nature road show”. SUMMARY:NSB: Climate Change-From the Atlas to Alaska
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Mike Norman \n  \nA double-header. Our two speakers have recently returned from two very different journeys in two very different parts of the world. However\, what they both witnessed was strikingly similar\, the effects of climate change. \nMike Norman\, a long standing bushland and coastcare coordinator\, travelled to Europe again after mountain climbing/ hiking in Italy\, Switzerland and France there with his Polish friends 25 years ago. His observations further confirmed the changes being caused by global warming\, and he considers where we are most likely heading. \nPeter Stephenson\, retired Principal Research Scientist at the WA Department of Fisheries and now a consultant on commercial fish populations\, was commissioned to study the dramatic change in fish stock in Alaskan waters. What he found\, even astounded him.

Walkers may encounter spider orchids\, donkey orchids\, bee orchids\, and purple enamel orchids\, among many others. These delicate blooms thrive in the park’s varied habitats\, from open woodland to damp wetlands\, making every walk a unique discovery. \nLocal guide Shelley Campbell will share her firsthand knowledge of the orchids found along the trail\, explaining their distinctive shapes\, colours\, seasonal patterns\, and fascinating pollination methods. This experience offers a deeper appreciation of Western Australia’s exceptional floral biodiversity. \nVisitors are encouraged to stay for a picnic and explore the park’s additional attractions after the walk. \nMeet that the carpark next to the Koala Boardwalk \nPlease note that the walking trail includes some uphill sections. SUMMARY:Unearthing Western Australia's extraordinary trapdoor spider diversity
DESCRIPTION:Western Australia supports an extraordinary diversity of trapdoor and other mygalomorph spiders\, much of which remains undescribed or poorly understood. In this talk\, Jeremy will draw on current research at the Western Australian Museum to explore how fieldwork\, museum collections\, morphology and DNA are helping to uncover this diversity\, understand how species are distributed across the landscape\, and ultimately inform their conservation. \nJeremy is Curator of Arachnids and Myriapods at the Western Australian Museum. His current research focuses on the taxonomy\, evolution and conservation of Australian mygalomorph spiders\, including trapdoor and wishbone spiders. DESCRIPTION:Paull’s Valley \nMeet:    Camel Farm\, Paull’s Valley Road UBD 294 N1\, parking around Trails Hub Café. \nDetails: The walk goes from the Camel farm on Paull’s Valley Road to Hewitt’s Hut. There are toilets both ends of the walk and a Cafe at Camel Farm. It is about 5 km return\, up hill on part of the way back\, mostly easy walking on lateritic soils.  Grades are variable\, probably around 3 could cover it. \nWear clothes appropriate to the weather (i.e. hat / rainwear) and suitable footwear.  Bring morning tea\, lunch and drinking water. It’s a short walk so we will have lunch back at the cars\, with no provision for afternoon tea. The last bird walk at Broz Park was so popular that we are running it again. This time in the month of August when different birds are expected and there should be water in the wetland. Birds\, such as Yellow-billed Spoonbills\, Great Egrets\, White-faced Herons\, Black-fronted Dotterels and even Shovelers have all been seen here in August.\n\nIt’s the number one bird hot spot (by size) in the Shire of Mundaring. Join local bird enthusiasts\, Rachel and Mike Green\, as they lead you on a guided bird walk around the park and tell you about the birds\, how to recognise them\, where in the park you might see them and how they behave.\n\nRachel and Mike are the authors of the “Guide to the Birds of Broz Park” and have surveyed the birds here over 80 times. They’ve recorded over 64 species here\, so far. They are also long-standing members of the Darling Range Branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club.\n\nEveryone who attends will be given a FREE copy of the Broz Park book\, if you haven’t already got one. This will help you look for and identify the birds. Rachel and Mike may put your bird identification skills to the test with a quiz to find specific birds. Of course\, you can use the book to help you!\n\nBroz Park has a sealed easy walking track all around its wetland and lake. It has a bird hide\, toilets\, trees\, native flowers\, BBQs\, seats with shelters\, a water fountain\, and of course\, the birds. The path is suitable for people with walking frames and wheelchairs.\n\nThe Shire of Mundaring supported by Natural Resource Management (NRM) and other organisations are working to improve the health of the wetland and this is a great opportunity to see this important work.\n\nThanks to the Shire of Mundaring who are sponsoring and organising this event and have invited us to join them. This is a free event. Bookings are essential – the last one booked out.\n\nBeen before? SUMMARY:NSB Golly Walk: Lakeview Contemplation Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Lakeview Contemplation Garden in Edgewater is a small community garden focused on growing WA native species.  Members of the local community took over what was once just another suburban park and turned it into a thriving mass of plants from around the state. Some of the volunteers who helped establish the garden will discuss its history and purpose before taking us on a guided tour.  The garden covers only 1000sqm so our visit will not take more than 45-60 minutes. \nThis will be a joint excursion with members of the Northern Suburbs Branch of the Wildflower Society. \nWe will meet at the Edgewater Shopping Centre\, corner Edgewater Drive and Wisteria Parade at 9.00am\, then car pool to the garden as parking space near the garden is very limited. If you arrive late\, park at the top of Ridge Close off Edgewater Drive and enter the garden from the rear entrance. \nWear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. \nBring morning tea – we will have it in the gardens\, subject to the weather. \nPhoto: Don Poynton

DESCRIPTION:Lois Gearing will talk about the little-known Naretha Bluebonnet Parrot \nNote: This event will not be held in our usual venue. It has been changed to Zig-Zig Seminar Room\, 50 Railway Road\, Kalamunda\n\nNote: no RSVP required.\n\n \n\nTopic:\n\nThe Naretha Bluebonnet (Northiella narethae) is one of Australia’s least-known parrots — and one of the very last to be discovered\, formally described as recently as 1921. Even its name carries deep meaning: narethae is derived from the local Indigenous name for saltbush\, a vital and lifesaving food source in the remote and often hostile country this parrot inhabits. \nThis remarkable species is confined to the Myall belt of Western and South Australia\, on the fringe of the Nullarbor Plain — a landscape characterised by vast distances\, saline soils\, bluebush and saltbush\, and very few trees. It is a land where survival itself seems improbable\, yet the Naretha Bluebonnet has evolved to endure and persist. \nFor a time\, agricultural development across parts of this region inadvertently benefited the species by providing more reliable sources of water\, and flocks once numbered in the hundreds. However\, other landscape changes have since made survival far more challenging. Gone are the days of flocks of 400\, and populations have declined significantly\, particularly in Western Australia. \nIn the 1990s\, the then Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) established a pioneering captive breeding program in partnership with private aviculturists — a novel and forward-thinking initiative for Western Australia. As part of this program\, surplus birds were made available to the public through CALM-run auctions. These auctions not only helped support the program\, but also played a critical role in raising awareness of a parrot that\, until then\, very few people knew existed — or that it lived in WA at all. \nIt was through one of these CALM auctions that Lois and Wayne Gearing first came to meet the Naretha Bluebonnet and began what has become a decades-long commitment to the species\, not as owners\, but as guardians. Their involvement has spanned both intensive avicultural work and time spent in the bird’s remote homelands — landscapes that leave one asking how any creature survives there\, let alone breeds successfully. \nToday\, the greatest threat facing the Naretha Bluebonnet is the loss of nesting habitat. Suitable nesting trees are few and far between\, and many of the mature Allocasuarina pauper trees — relied upon for nesting hollows — are now splitting and collapsing with age. Regeneration of younger trees is minimal or absent. Without active intervention\, the lack of nesting trees places this resilient little parrot at serious risk of extinction. \nAs of 2026\, there are no Naretha Bluebonnets held in any zoos or wildlife parks in Australia. \nThis presentation explores the ecology of the Naretha Bluebonnet\, the harsh and beautiful landscapes it inhabits\, and the plants and trees essential to its survival — and tells the story of a small\, tough Australian battler that urgently needs our understanding\, advocacy and help. \n\n\nPlus:\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – Mike and Rachel Green will give a talk on the Spotted Bowerbird. \n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If you wish to show a photograph\, please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. DESCRIPTION:Pickering Brook  \nMeet:              At the end of Bracken Rd in Pickering Brook. Turn right at the T junction at the end of the road and park at the roadside. [UBD map 316\, A12]. \nDetails:            The walk is 5 – 6 km along good bush paths with some hills in open woodland. The walk has been shortened as we will go to Boundary Rd instead of the powerlines. Wear clothes appropriate to the weather (i.e. hat / rainwear) and suitable footwear.  Bring morning tea\, lunch and drinking water.  Afternoon tea/coffee back at the cars\, if you want to stay. \nPlease be aware\, if the weather dictates\, the leader may choose to cancel or change the walk.
