SUMMARY:Beneath Our Feet: Fossorial Herpetofauna of the Western Australian Sandplain
DESCRIPTION:The sandplains lining our Western Australian coastline are celebrated for their high floristic diversity. Less well known is the impressive variety of scaly residents these areas contain. In the Perth region alone\, you may encounter some 70 species of reptiles and 16 frogs! many of which remain poorly known\, living right beneath our feet. \nThe term fossorial refers to animals adapted for burrowing\, spending the vast majority of their lives underground. With no shortage of sandy coastline in WA\, there is an unmatched diversity of fascinating subterranean snakes\, lizards and frogs hidden beneath the surface. \nDanny Melville is an amateur herpetologist\, passionate naturalist and new member of the WA Naturalists’ Club. During his presentation\, he will discuss the biology and evolution of fossorial reptiles\, introduce a range of species found across Western Australia\, and explore why these often-overlooked members of our unique fauna may be under serious threat. \nThe presentation will feature images captured on Danny’s field trips\, offering a glimpse into the rarely seen world of fossorial reptiles and amphibians.

SUMMARY:iNaturalist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about the names of plants\, fungi and animals you see in the bush\, or wondered if it was native or introduced\, common or rare? Then this workshop is for you! \n\n\n\nIn this workshop you will learn the fun and interactive way of sharing your observations\, identifying your organisms\, and joining projects\, as well as getting hands on experience with the iNaturalist application (app) on your smart device (phone/tablet/laptop). Your contributions to this app / platform can create research quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature\, and you will be able to join our community of >400\,000 citizen scientists\, all linked with the Atlas of Living Australia. \n\n\n\nThis workshop costs $5 to assist with venue hire and supports the WA Naturalists’ Club. Please register through Humanitix as places are limited. Please install the iNaturalist app on your smart device(s) and create an account prior to attending. Otherwise\, we will help you set it up during the workshop. Bring your smart device(s) with you to gain the best experience. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be run by Jolanda Keeble\, Ry Beaver and Arlene Quinn.

SUMMARY:Cheryl Lohr on feral cat control
DESCRIPTION:Note: no RSVP required.\n\nSpeaker: Cheryl Lohr – DRB member\n\n\nCheryl originally hails from a farm in the wheatbelt and is now a Senior research scientist in the Animal Science Program at DBCA. She has an eclectic research history including everything from decision support\, stakeholder engagement\, software design\, and ecological modelling to testing contraceptives in brushtail possums.\nIn 2017 Cheryl took charge of the Rangelands restoration project in central WA. She chases boodies\, mala\, possums\, and golden bandicoots in circles trying to count them\, while also still trying to figure out how to eliminate the feral cats. She’s had great success with the first successful reintroduction of boodies to the open landscape! The main site where Cheryl works was known as Lorna Glen\, but after a huge amount of work with traditional owners\, volunteers\, and students the area is now the Matuwa Kurrara Kurrara National Park. In recent years the job has grown again\, and you can now find Cheryl working to conserve threatened fauna almost anywhere in the Goldfields.\n\n\nTopic:\n\nCheryl will be giving a presentation on the history of Australia’s longest running feral cat control program\, the lessons learned\, and an accounting of the many threatened species that are showing strong signs of recovery on Matuwa Kurrara Kurrara National Park.\n\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – Tanya Marwood (member) will give a 10-min presentation about a trip to Tasmania in Feb.\n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If you wish to show a photograph\, please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. We have a dedicated email for this purpose natclub@webco.com.au\nThing of the month / Things coming up next month: These two presentations are about things in nature happening this month and things coming up\, so if you have any photos or information\, send them to: natclub@webco.com.au\nDoor prizes: You could also be the lucky winner of a door prize. We make sure there are prizes for both members and visitors.\nRaffle: We will have a great raffle – please raid your piggy bank for a bit more cash\, $5 for 3 tickets.\n\nTime: Please come at 7.15pm or earlier if you wish\, for a 7.30pm start as we start promptly. We are open from 6.45pm. We finish formal proceedings no later than 9.30pm.\nDonation: All this for only a donation of $3 per person for adult members ($0 for child members)\, and $5 per adult visitor and $1 per visiting child to help with the costs of running the club\, venue hire\, insurance and so on.  We do not have EFTPOS facilities yet.\nEntrance: It is a condition of entry that everyone signs in on arrival\, thank you.\nParking: Free parking right outside.\nWheelchair access: Everything is on one level.\nToilets: Are inside.\nBookings: No bookings required.\nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell.

SUMMARY:Diversity and mating behaviour of Australian wishbone spiders (genus Aname) in the Northern Jarrah Forest (NSB)
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Andrea Piccinini \n  \nPresenter: Andrea Piccinini  (PhD Candidate\, UWA). \nThe wishbone spiders of the genus Aname are highly diverse mygalomorph spiders\, with an extremely widespread distribution across mainland Australia. Andrea’s project focused on addressing the taxonomic knowledge shortfall on this group in the Northern Jarrah Forest subregion\, and providing insights on mating behaviour and the influence of sexual selection on these spiders. Six new species have already been described for the area (with many more to come)\, and a remarkable mating system – especially regarding post-copulation behaviours – has been revealed.

A self-declared “insect enthusiast”\, Jasper relishes the challenge of identifying the many blurry insect photographs he’s sent with zero context by both friends and strangers alike\, waxing poetically about bugs to anyone within hearing distance\, and spending way too much time on tedious art projects (majority of which are\, unsurprisingly\, also bug-related).\n\nTopic:\n \n\n\nPhotographs:\n[A] Uraba lugens by Alan Henderson via New Scientist\, 2020\n[B] Pterolocera sp. by Jasper Dean\, 2023\n[C] Hypochrysops apelles by stevecsurches via iNaturalist\, 2022\n+ [D] Jasper Dean Profile\, aka me! — An action shot from in the field\, ft. a little beetle (which I was very excited about finding\, as you can tell haha)\n\n\nJasper gave a talk to the Main club of the WA Nats in November 2025. He has agreed to give another talk to our branch\, with some changes to suit our audience.\n\nJoin Jasper as he delivers another fun-fact-filled insect anthology\, this time delving into the wondrous world of caterpillars! Learn about clever defensive strategies\, ranging from charming to macabre\, their muscle-for-hire relationship with ants\, and whether a caterpillar’s memories can truly survive the radical change of metamorphosis. Featuring high-octane footage\, tasteful bodily re-enactments of dramatic spectacle and the debut of some Lepidoptera-inspired poetry\, be sure to clear your calendars to enjoy this brilliantly bug-filled evening!\n\n\nPlus:\n\n\nFocus/ Boffins talk – A member will give a short talk.
