SUMMARY:DRB Presents: Alex George talks about Autumn in the bush
DESCRIPTION:DRB Presents: Alex George talks about Autumn in the bush\n\nNote: no RSVP required.\nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell.\n\n\nSpeaker:\n\n\nAlex George from Murdoch University. Alex George worked as a botanist at the Western Australian Herbarium for 21 years\, then edited the Flora of Australia based in Canberra for 12 years. Returning to Perth\, he did consulting work for some years but now enjoys the freedom of doing his own research and writing on various botanical projects. He was twice the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. Besides many books that he has edited and indexed\, he has written 17 books (some with joint authors) and published more than 500 scientific papers and articles for newsletters.\n\nTopic:\n\n\nThis talk will discuss what may be seen among our wildflowers at a season when few people venture out. And there is much to look at. During the dry summer\, some plants survive by reducing their internal activity\, shown by changes in foliage colour that can be very striking as it intensifies into autumn. Then\, within a few days of the first winter rains\, the same leaves revert to green and resume activity. Interestingly\, there are some plants that flower in autumn\, including Banksias – there are more of these to be seen in autumn than at any other season. We can also observe the first stages of how wildflowers respond to the bushfires that we know\, from the plants’ behaviour\, have been part of the natural environment here for millions of years.\n\n\n\nPlus:\n\nKids’ talk – one of your younger members will be giving a 5 minutes kids’ talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8 minutes Boffins’ talk. Tony Start will give a talk on “Tsunamis”\n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If we have time\, one of our experts will identify them or briefly talk about them\, or the person bringing them can talk about where they saw it\, etc. Photographs are particularly welcome\, as everyone can see them. If you wish to show a photograph please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. We have a dedicated email for this purpose” natclub@webco.com.au\nThing of the month / Things coming up next month: These two presentations are about things in nature happening this month and things coming up\, so if you have any photos or information\, send them to: natclub@webco.com.au\nDoor prizes: You could also be the lucky winner of a door prize. We make sure there are prizes for both members and visitors.\nRaffle: We will have a great raffle  – please raid your piggy bank for a bit more cash\, $5 for 3 tickets.\n\nTime: Please come at 7.15pm or earlier if you wish\, for a 7.30pm start as we start promptly. We are open from 6.45pm. We finish formal proceedings no later than 9.30pm.\nDonation: All this for only a donation of $3 per person for adult members ($0 for child members)\, and $5 per adult visitor and $1 per visiting child to help with the costs of running the club\, venue hire\, insurance and so on.  Please bring the right CASH to help us avoid long queues. Thanks. SUMMARY:DRB Presents: Paul H Brown on Dryandra Woodland National Park’s mammals and endemic south-west birds
DESCRIPTION:Paul H Brown will talk about Dryandra Woodland National Park’s mammals and endemic south-west birds \nNote: no RSVP required. \nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell. \nSpeaker: Paul H Brown is the author of DRYANDRA WOODLANDS NATIONAL PARK: Unique mammals and south-west endemic birds (2025) \n \nTopic: \nYou are invited to a talk by this author on Narrogin’s Dryandra Woodland. The book describes Dryandra Woodland National Park’s 27 mammals\, 155 bush birds\, vegetation\, predator control and its fantastic landscapes. It is the first book on Dryandra’s wildlife since Vince Serventy’s 1970 book ‘Dryandra: The story of an Australian Forest’. \nJoin Paul for a chat on why he wrote the book and a few snippets from the book and the animals it describes. \nSouth-west Australia is a biodiversity hotspot. Clearing\, foxes\, feral cats and bushland degradation have devastated the mammals and birds of WA’s Wheatbelt region. However\, the 30\,000ha Dryandra Woodland is an oasis for many unique mammals that once occurred across the Australian continent\, and it protects a nearly complete list of native bush birds. You can see the Numbat\, Woylie\, elusive Echidna and Chuditch (Western Quoll) – maybe in a single visit. \nThe south-west is also renowned for its endemic bird species and subspecies. Paul has described and provided photos of 38 of these birds\, plus another seven threatened and ground nesting birds. He provides the full list of 155 birds found in Dryandra. \nPaul (0466 827 550; brownieph60@gmail.com ) can exchange your cash (or card) for a copy of his book – $50.00 each. \nPlus: \n\nKids’ talk – one of your younger members will be giving a 5 minutes kids’ talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8 minute specialist subject talk.\n“Nature road show”. SUMMARY:WA leads the pack: The natural history of Western Australia’s islands\, and comparisons with other islands of Australia.
DESCRIPTION:There are about 3500 islands in WA\, which is more than any other Australian jurisdiction. All are in\npublic ownership\, and almost all south of the Kimberley are managed by a single government\nagency\, and almost all Kimberley islands are held under native title. This is a situation unique in the world.\nPresenters Andrew Burbidge and Ian Abbott’s lecture is arranged in two parts. First\, how islands differ from the mainland; why\nthey are interesting; a brief account of some biological curiosities; and an outline of the natural\nfactors that have led to changes in insular biotas. The second part is about nature conservation on\nislands\, with a focus on WA\, and impacts of invasive species on native mammals; the management\nactions taken to minimise extinctions on islands\, and the role of islands in conserving species that\nare threatened on mainland Australia. \nDr. Andrew A Burbidge AO\nAndrew is a conservation biologist who worked for state government conservation agencies for 33\nyears and has since been continuing this work. His main research areas include/included biological\nsurvey and conservation reserve design and acquisition; island survey\, biosecurity and\nmanagement; control of invasive species; Aboriginal oral history of mammals and fire; and\nthreatened species conservation\, especially mammals.\nAndrew is chair of the WA Threatened Species Scientific Committee and the Barrow Island Gorgon\nGas Development Quarantine Expert Panel. \nIan Abbott spent most of his career as a research scientist in the WA Public Service (1979-2014).\nSince retiring he has continued some of this work and ventured into new subjects. These include\nisland and mainland ecology and evolution in WA and beyond; ecological study of Jarrah\, Banksia\ngrandis\, and the forest avifauna; Noongar fire regimes and their names for bird and mammal\nspecies; and mammal extinction in WA. \nBoth presenters are widely published. \nThere will also be a focus talk from Daniel Heald on fossil insects. And Paul Doughty will talk to us about the upcoming FrogID Week (Nov 7-16). \nMeeting begins at 7.30pm at the Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, University of Western Australia. Parking is available at Clifton St entrance to the campus*  All are welcome to attend\, and a donation of $3 for members or $5 for guests. EFT available. \n*Please note no parking currently available at Gordon Street entrance; drive around to Clifton St.

SUMMARY:Bold Park: join us for a relaxed Sunday morning walk
DESCRIPTION:Come and join a relaxed walk around Bold Park while looking for some of the wildflowers and animals typical for this time of year – the Noongar season of Kambarang – in urban bushlands.\nBold Park is the largest patch of remnant bushland on Perth’s Swan Coastal Plain. It is home to over 300 species of native plants\, 90 birds\, 30 reptiles\, and numerous other animals. The park is managed by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (BGPA) with the Friends of Bold Park Bushland being active supporters in the conservation of the park.\nIn early November we can expect to see the large flowers of the balga and slender banksia\, which will be attracting honeyeaters and insects\, including flower wasps and butterflies. Birds will be busy catching these insects\, including the beautiful rainbow bee-eaters which nest in the sandy soil of the park. We may also see lizards\, like shingleback skinks\, sunning themselves in the early morning rays.\nMeet at the Camel Lake carpark\, at the southern end of Perry Lakes Drive. Additional parking is available across the road at Perry Lakes Reserve. The walk will be approximately 3.5km long\, including some moderately steep uphill sections\, but we’ll be stopping frequently to check out the flowers and animals. Wear good walking shoes\, bring water to drink\, and dress for the forecast weather.

SUMMARY:Wildflower Identification with Author Penny Hussey at Hawkevale Bushland\, High Wycombe
DESCRIPTION:Hawkevale Bushland is situated in the Perth foothills\, near the corner of Kalamunda Road and the Roe Highway\, in the High Wycombe area. \nHawkevale Bushland had already been recognised as containing one of the three most threatened plant communities remaining on the Swan Coastal Plain. There has been a DEP recommendation that 20 hectares – the best bush areas – need to be conserved to maintain their environmental value. \nThe reserve lies at the north-east corner of the built-up area\, adjacent to Roe Highway.\nWe will enter the reserve at the south-east gate.  Turn north off Kalamunda Road onto Hawkevale Road.  Follow it to a T-junction\, with the reserve fence ahead.  Turn east onto Buttercup Crescent\, park on the verge where the road makes an abrupt turn south.\n \n
