DESCRIPTION:Join Jasper as he delivers an entomological anthology style talk detailing topics of Katydid comparisons\, Odonatan inventions\, metamorphic memories and other such insect musings.\nJasper Dean is the current Secretary of the WA Insect Study Society. He is currently studying Conservation Biology and English Literature (double major) at UWA.\n\nThe photos show (1) a leaf katydid in Jasper’s backyard and (2) a dragonfly naiad from the Wildlife Show last year\, both photographed by Jasper.\n\nThis main talk will be followed by a short focus from recent Serventy Award winner\, Brodie O’Breza on their special interest in marine science.

DESCRIPTION:Excursion Timing: 9.30am start -11am finish.\n\nExcursion Meeting Place: We will meet at the very top car park on Falls Road\, the FIRST car park as you drive down Falls Road from Lesmurdie. It is called Terrace Carpark on Google maps. If you have reached the Falls\, you have gone too far. Look for the DRB Nats signs.\n \nPlease note there are no toilet facilities on the walk\, but there are some close to the Falls. Bring your binoculars and wear solid footwear.\n\n\nLeaders: Renowned naturalists Rachel and Mike Green.\nThis will be a bird-watching excursion around the Upper Lesmurdie Brook. The leaders have been conducting a bird survey over the past year around the brook.\n\nThe walk is relatively easy but it is a gravel path and sometimes uneven\, so not accessible for wheelchairs. There is one very short steep section; the rest is relatively flat. There will be water in the brook and some of the local birds will be nesting. Red-tailed Black Cockatoos\, Grey Fantails\, Australian Ring-neck Parrots\, Striated Pardalotes and others have been seen nesting in the area during the survey period.\n\nPlease bring your own water as there is none on site. Toilets are available further down the road\, and there are BBQ tables for lunch. Note the weather\, and bring suitable footwear and clothing.\nBinoculars\, and a pen and paper to record sightings may be useful. Mobile phone reception is variable.\n\nPlease note there are only 20 places available.\n\n

Wear clothing and shoes suitable for the weather\, and consider wearing a Hat and sunglasses if the weather is hot. As there is no access to the Centre\, please bring along any food and drinks you would like to have for the 2 hours at the park. DESCRIPTION:DRB Presents: Courtney Butterworth – Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Response \nNote: no RSVP required. \nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell. \nSpeaker: \nCourtney Butterworth \nTopic: \n \nPolyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Response \nPolyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB\, Euwallacea fornicatus) is a small beetle native to Southeast Asia that tunnels into the trunks\, stems and branches of trees and plants. \nThis beetle is highly invasive and attacks a wide range of plant species\, with over 500 documented globally to have been affected. \nDPIRD is responding to a detection of this invasive pest in the Perth metropolitan area and has implemented a Quarantine Area (QA). This restriction aims to prevent the spread of the pest by limiting the movement of wood and plant materials. \nFor more information see: https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/borer \nPlus: \n\nKids’ talk – one of your younger members will be giving a 5 minutes kids’ talk.\nBoffins talk – A member will give an 8 minutes Boffins’ talk. SUMMARY:Long May They Grace our Skies - Black Cockatoo Research and Conservation 
DESCRIPTION:Main Club Meeting Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, UWA\, Clifton Street Nedlands \n\nMurdoch University’s Black Cockatoo Conservation Management research team has been undertaking research on Western Australia’s black cockatoos over the last 18 years. The health research on Carnaby’s cockatoos aims to better understand the potential role of disease as a threatening process for this species. Over the last 12 years\, the research team has been tracking all three species of black cockatoos using GPS and ARGOS satellite telemetry\, which enables the team to obtain flock movement\, behavioural and ecological data across different spatial scales. The talk will discuss the team’s research on black cockatoos\, as well as the applications of the findings of this research to the Keep Carnaby’s Flying – Ngoolarks Forever project\, a large-scale community engagement project support by Lotterywest from 2022-2024.\n\nProfessor Kris Warren from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University has worked in the field of wildlife\, zoological and conservation medicine for over 20 years. Staff and students in the Conservation Medicine Program undertake research on the health of threatened wildlife species within ecological contexts\, throughout Australia and internationally\, in order to assist recovery efforts to conserve these species. Professor Warren was appointed as a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine in the Specialty of Wildlife Population Health in 2011\, and as a Member of the Zoological Parks Authority Board for Perth Zoo in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Camel Farm \nMeet:              Camel Farm\, Paull’s Valley Road UBD 294 N1\, parking around Trails Hub Cafe \nDetails:           The walk goes along the Bibbulmun Track from the Camel farm on Paull’s Valley Road to Hewitt’s Hut. There are toilets both ends of the walk and a cafe at Camel Farm. It is about 5 km return\, up hill on part of the way back\, mostly easy walking on lateritic soils.  Grades are variable\, probably around 3 could cover it. \nWear clothes appropriate to the weather (i.e. hat / rainwear) and suitable footwear.  Bring morning tea\, lunch and drinking water. It’s a short walk so we will have lunch back at the cars\, with no provision for afternoon tea. SUMMARY:Long Range Excursion - Westonia
DESCRIPTION:The Club has been invited to visit the property of Bush Blocks Guardians in Westonia adjacent to Chiddarcooping Nature Reserve (western side). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a wide variety of landscapes: large granite outcrops and slabs with shallow gnammas\, large tors and a very unique and extensive mini mogote field; a long and high breakaway with many caves and ochre patches; several water courses set in a wide variety of vegetation types.  \n\n\n\n(Photo by Peter Ewing). \n\n\n\n\nThere are active malleefowl nests and we can visit a range of Aboriginal heritage stone placements and a dolerite dyke tool-making site. We will also learn about the revegetation progress and methods being used\, about some of the checkered history of the property’s owners and use\, about the long-term wildlife monitoring\, and we will go for walks on the property\, and drives/walks in Chiddarcooping Nature Reserve. \n\n\n\nOther activities anticipated are carrying out flora surveys and spending a couple of days at Baladjie Rock. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are interested in participating in the Long Range Excursion\, please RSVP as soon as possible below. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to add to the stock of knowledge of our wonderful local environment? Join the ‘citizen scientist’ movement and learn to use iNaturalist! \nIn this digital era\, we know that there are now better ways to share our nature observations than writing them down and filing the lists in a cupboard!  Most of us use our mobile phone to snap images of plants and animals. It is but a small step to upload them to the internet database iNaturalist Australia so the wider public (including scientists) can benefit from our observations. \nThe Club has had projects on the iNaturalist Australia since 2020\, as a way to share our observations with the wider community. We do this partly to discuss what we have observed\, partly to get expert opinions on identification\, and ultimately to contribute to the Atlas of Living Australia. \nIn this workshop you will learn from our experts how to set up the iNaturalist app on your phone and how to use it on your laptop. You will also learn how to make observations and how to search iNaturalist to identify what you’ve observed. \nPlease bring your smartphone and/or laptop / tablet and be knowledgeable of passwords to enable you to download from the app store (if not done before the workshop).

SUMMARY:Dragonfly biodiversity and wetland restoration by Belinda Robson.
DESCRIPTION:Dragonflies (Odonata) are some of the most aesthetically pleasing and most loved wetland insects\, yet we know very little about the ecology or biology of Australian species. There are more than 40 species found in southwestern Australia\, of which nearly half are endemic species\, and there are also endemic genera.  \n\n\n\n\nThis presentation will describe the southwest fauna and dragonfly and damselfly life cycles and report on recent research to understand patterns of species diversity in urban (Perth) wetlands to identify the qualities of wetlands needed to maximise their diversity.  \n\n\n\nBelinda is an Associate Professor at Murdoch University. She has been working on the effects of climate change on biodiversity\, especially the effects of climatic drying and is working on new ways to manage ecosystems to sustain freshwater biodiversity as the climate continues to dry.

SUMMARY:NSB Golly Walk: Lake Gnangara
DESCRIPTION:  \nLake Gnangara is the most southerly of the Wanneroo wetlands. The surrounding terrain consists of low dunes and undulating sand plains. Over the last few decades\, extraction of water from the Gnangara Mound has resulted in a significant reduction of the areal extent of the lake. \nOur walk will take us along the eastern side where we will walk through Banksia Woodland and return beside Fringing Melaleuca Wetlands. Hopefully we will find orchids in flower and with the recent rain there is water in the lake and waterfowl. \nApprox 3km return. \nIf time permits we will visit nearby Tuscan Park\, a little hidden gem as the riparian vegetation is quite dense. Rainbow Bee Eaters nest there in summer and some amazing orchids can be found over spring. \nMeet:   Lake Gnangara Car Park at the northern end of Alexander Drive\, 400m from turn off at Gnangara Road. \nBring:  Comfortable footwear and clothes suitable for the weather.  Note there are no toilets on site. The last kilometre is up a gravel road. \nDetails:         The walk is along the Bibbulmun Track\, out and back\, along a mix of undulating gravel trail and vehicle access roads for approximately 8 km. \nThere is a toilet at the car-park and at Hewitt’s Hill campsite. DESCRIPTION:DRB Presents: BoorYul-Bah-Bilya: A new community catchment plan for the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River) \nNote: no RSVP required. \nCOVID19: Even though restrictions have eased\, we will still encourage members and visitors to take precautions and please do not attend if unwell. \nSpeaker: \n  \nFrancesca Flynn \n\nTopic: \nBoorYul-Bah-Bilya (Mandoon Bilya – Helena River) \n \nLess than 1% of WA’s major rivers are in pristine or near-pristine condition\, and despite the good work of many\, river health continues to decline. To have a realistic chance of restoring river health\, new thinking and approaches are urgently needed. BoorYul-Bah-Bilya (BBB) is an exciting initiative launched in 2024 by Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association that aims to address declining river health through creation of a new type of community catchment plan. \n  \nBBB is the first program of its kind to consider environmental\, social\, cultural and economic factors in one integrated plan\, allowing a better balance between the many values of rivers. Its grassroots approach ensures local knowledge is embedded throughout and enables community\, residents\, businesses\, schools and government to contribute towards the future vision. \n  \nThe first BBB plan focuses on the Mandoon Bilya\, or Helena River\, which flows from Ballardong Country near York and Beverley\, through Mundaring and Kalamunda in the Perth Hills\, and down into Whadjuk Country through Midland\, before joining the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) in Guildford. However\, BNAA hope to create widespread transformative change by creating a transferable model that can be applied to any river. The first BBB plan will be released to coincide with the 2029 Perth Bicentenary\, an important milestone to consider the impact of colonisation on our waterways and how we collectively address the challenges of urbanisation and a drying climate. \n  \nThe presentation will be given by BNAA Executive Director\, Francesca Flynn\, an environmental scientist and local hills resident who is passionate about creating a better future for Australian rivers. Rachel and Mike will give a talk on Ospreys. \n“Nature road show”. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring items to place on the display table or to send photographs to the MC in advance\, e.g. a sample flower\, an insect\, and so on – anything of natural history interest that has legally been obtained. If we have time\, one of our experts will identify them or briefly talk about them\, or the person bringing them can talk about where they saw it\, etc. Photographs are particularly welcome\, as everyone can see them. If you wish to show a photograph please email it\, no later than the Wednesday before the meeting\, to our MC for this night\, and she/he will include it on her PowerPoint slides. DESCRIPTION:Burswood Bridges \nMeet: Taylor St. car-park\, off Canning Hwy (river side of McCallum Park) [UBD map 7\, G8] \nDetails:           The walk is an easy loop walk of approximately 6 km\, which can be shortened as necessary\, on both sides of the Swan river – East Perth via Windan\, Matagarup and Booloo Bridges and Burswood Park – all on good paved paths. \nWear clothes appropriate to the weather (i.e. hat / rainwear) and suitable footwear.  Bring morning tea and drinking water. With a short walk afternoon tea may be omitted and we  can have lunch at the cars. There are toilets en route. \nPlease be aware\, if the weather dictates\, the leader may choose to cancel or change the walk.
