SUMMARY:Serventy Memorial Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:Kerry will talk about establishing the WA Parks Foundation when she was Governor\, and the unique\, beautiful but threatened environment in Western Australia. She believes that there is an important role for organisations such as the WA Parks Foundation\, the WA Naturalists’ Club and others in encouraging understanding of\, and a love for\, our natural environment. This role is complemented by the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and the Salvado Trail that encourage people to hike as a way of experiencing nature\, including its healing potential. She will discuss how the WA Parks Foundation aims to work in collaboration with the other organisations\, both government and private. The theme of her talk will be drawn from Dr Seuss’s quote “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot\, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” \n\n\n\nThe Hon Kerry Sanderson AC was Governor of Western Australia from 2014 to 2018. She served as Edith Cowan University’s fourth Chancellor (2018-2021). Kerry is currently Chair St John of God Health Care and the WA Parks Foundation\, as well as being a patron of several charitable and community organisations. Prior to being appointed Governor\, Mrs Sanderson served as Chair or non-executive director of several organisations. \n\n\n\nKerry has been Agent General for Western Australia (2008 to 2011) and Chief Executive Officer of Fremantle Ports (1991 to 2008). She was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2016 and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by both the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University. In 2020 she received the award of Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). DESCRIPTION:🖤 Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre Walk – Kaarakin\, Martin\n\nplease RSVP or scroll down to pay \n\nJoin members of the Darling Range Branch as we visit the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre at Kaarakin plays a vital role in protecting some of Western Australia’s most iconic and endangered wildlife. Located in the Perth Hills\, the Centre is dedicated to the rescue\, rehabilitation\, and conservation of black cockatoos and other native species impacted by climate change\, habitat loss\, and urban development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4\n\n\n\nVolunteers at the Centre currently care for around 200 animals\, many of which would otherwise be at serious risk of injury\, displacement\, or extinction. These passionate volunteers work year-round to provide expert care\, safe rehabilitation\, and long-term conservation solutions for wildlife that have lost their natural homes. \nDuring this guided walk\, participants will learn how the Centre supports black cockatoos by recreating and protecting essential nesting\, foraging\, and roosting sites—critical habitats that have been severely reduced or degraded over recent decades due to urban sprawl and land clearing. The walk offers valuable insight into the daily work of the volunteers and the innovative strategies being used to help these birds survive and thrive. \nHuman activity has had a massive and detrimental impact on black cockatoo populations in recent decades. Habitat loss and fragmentation remain the greatest threats facing all three species of black cockatoos in south-west Western Australia. SUMMARY:WA leads the pack: The natural history of Western Australia’s islands\, and comparisons with other islands of Australia.
DESCRIPTION:There are about 3500 islands in WA\, which is more than any other Australian jurisdiction. All are in\npublic ownership\, and almost all south of the Kimberley are managed by a single government\nagency\, and almost all Kimberley islands are held under native title. This is a situation unique in the world.\nPresenters Andrew Burbidge and Ian Abbott’s lecture is arranged in two parts. First\, how islands differ from the mainland; why\nthey are interesting; a brief account of some biological curiosities; and an outline of the natural\nfactors that have led to changes in insular biotas. The second part is about nature conservation on\nislands\, with a focus on WA\, and impacts of invasive species on native mammals; the management\nactions taken to minimise extinctions on islands\, and the role of islands in conserving species that\nare threatened on mainland Australia. \nDr. Andrew A Burbidge AO\nAndrew is a conservation biologist who worked for state government conservation agencies for 33\nyears and has since been continuing this work. His main research areas include/included biological\nsurvey and conservation reserve design and acquisition; island survey\, biosecurity and\nmanagement; control of invasive species; Aboriginal oral history of mammals and fire; and\nthreatened species conservation\, especially mammals.\nAndrew is chair of the WA Threatened Species Scientific Committee and the Barrow Island Gorgon\nGas Development Quarantine Expert Panel. \nIan Abbott spent most of his career as a research scientist in the WA Public Service (1979-2014).\nSince retiring he has continued some of this work and ventured into new subjects. These include\nisland and mainland ecology and evolution in WA and beyond; ecological study of Jarrah\, Banksia\ngrandis\, and the forest avifauna; Noongar fire regimes and their names for bird and mammal\nspecies; and mammal extinction in WA. \nBoth presenters are widely published. \nThere will also be a focus talk from Daniel Heald on fossil insects. And Paul Doughty will talk to us about the upcoming FrogID Week (Nov 7-16). \nMeeting begins at 7.30pm at the Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, University of Western Australia. SUMMARY:Bold Park: join us for a relaxed Sunday morning walk
DESCRIPTION:Come and join a relaxed walk around Bold Park while looking for some of the wildflowers and animals typical for this time of year – the Noongar season of Kambarang – in urban bushlands.\nBold Park is the largest patch of remnant bushland on Perth’s Swan Coastal Plain. It is home to over 300 species of native plants\, 90 birds\, 30 reptiles\, and numerous other animals. The park is managed by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (BGPA) with the Friends of Bold Park Bushland being active supporters in the conservation of the park.\nIn early November we can expect to see the large flowers of the balga and slender banksia\, which will be attracting honeyeaters and insects\, including flower wasps and butterflies. Birds will be busy catching these insects\, including the beautiful rainbow bee-eaters which nest in the sandy soil of the park. We may also see lizards\, like shingleback skinks\, sunning themselves in the early morning rays.\nMeet at the Camel Lake carpark\, at the southern end of Perry Lakes Drive. Additional parking is available across the road at Perry Lakes Reserve. The walk will be approximately 3.5km long\, including some moderately steep uphill sections\, but we’ll be stopping frequently to check out the flowers and animals. Wear good walking shoes\, bring water to drink\, and dress for the forecast weather.

SUMMARY:Wildflower Identification with Author  Penny Hussey  at Hawkevale Bushland\, High Wycombe
DESCRIPTION:Hawkevale Bushland is situated in the Perth foothills\, near the corner of Kalamunda Road and the Roe Highway\, in the High Wycombe area. \nHawkevale Bushland had already been recognised as containing one of the three most threatened plant communities remaining on the Swan Coastal Plain. There has been a DEP recommendation that 20 hectares – the best bush areas – need to be conserved to maintain their environmental value. \nThe reserve lies at the north-east corner of the built-up area\, adjacent to Roe Highway.\nWe will enter the reserve at the south-east gate.  Turn north off Kalamunda Road onto Hawkevale Road.  Follow it to a T-junction\, with the reserve fence ahead.  Turn east onto Buttercup Crescent\, park on the verge where the road makes an abrupt turn south.\n \n

SUMMARY:Jasper Dean -  An insect enthusiast's guide to public speaking
DESCRIPTION:Join Jasper as he delivers an entomological anthology style talk detailing topics of Katydid comparisons\, Odonatan inventions\, metamorphic memories and other such insect musings.\nJasper Dean is the current Secretary of the WA Insect Study Society. He is currently studying Conservation Biology and English Literature (double major) at UWA.\n\nThe photos show (1) a leaf katydid in Jasper’s backyard and (2) a dragonfly naiad from the Wildlife Show last year\, both photographed by Jasper.\n\nThis main talk will be followed by a short focus from recent Serventy Award winner\, Brodie O’Breza on their special interest in marine science.

DESCRIPTION:Excursion Timing: 9.30am start -11am finish.\n\nExcursion Meeting Place: We will meet at the very top car park on Falls Road\, the FIRST car park as you drive down Falls Road from Lesmurdie. It is called Terrace Carpark on Google maps. If you have reached the Falls\, you have gone too far. Look for the DRB Nats signs.\n \nPlease note there are no toilet facilities on the walk\, but there are some close to the Falls. Bring your binoculars and wear solid footwear.\n\n\nLeaders: Renowned naturalists Rachel and Mike Green.\nThis will be a bird-watching excursion around the Upper Lesmurdie Brook. The leaders have been conducting a bird survey over the past year around the brook.\n\nThe walk is relatively easy but it is a gravel path and sometimes uneven\, so not accessible for wheelchairs. There is one very short steep section; the rest is relatively flat. There will be water in the brook and some of the local birds will be nesting. Red-tailed Black Cockatoos\, Grey Fantails\, Australian Ring-neck Parrots\, Striated Pardalotes and others have been seen nesting in the area during the survey period.\n\nPlease bring your own water as there is none on site. Toilets are available further down the road\, and there are BBQ tables for lunch. Note the weather\, and bring suitable footwear and clothing.\nBinoculars\, and a pen and paper to record sightings may be useful. Mobile phone reception is variable.\n\nPlease note there are only 20 places available.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:DUE TO BAD WEATHER FORECAST & LACK OF EVENT LEADER\, THIS HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL NEXT MONTH. \nJoin members of the WA Naturalists’ Club for a self-directed walk around the grounds of  Bold Park. \nMeet outside 10 am at the Ecology Centre 165 Perry Lakes Dr\, City Beach. \nPossum Walk usually has a few patches of orchids close to the path\, and the Camel Lake & Tuart Loops have the best quality bushland and therefore seem to have the most wildlife. \nPlease bring a phone with the iNaturalist app on it to record your sightings.  If you have past surveys\, bring them along to show guests. Wear clothing and shoes suitable for the weather\, and consider wearing a Hat and sunglasses if the weather is hot. As there is no access to the Centre\, please bring along any food and drinks you would like to have for the 2 hours at the park. DESCRIPTION:Main Club Meeting Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre\, UWA\, Clifton Street Nedlands \n\nMurdoch University’s Black Cockatoo Conservation Management research team has been undertaking research on Western Australia’s black cockatoos over the last 18 years. The health research on Carnaby’s cockatoos aims to better understand the potential role of disease as a threatening process for this species. Over the last 12 years\, the research team has been tracking all three species of black cockatoos using GPS and ARGOS satellite telemetry\, which enables the team to obtain flock movement\, behavioural and ecological data across different spatial scales. The talk will discuss the team’s research on black cockatoos\, as well as the applications of the findings of this research to the Keep Carnaby’s Flying – Ngoolarks Forever project\, a large-scale community engagement project support by Lotterywest from 2022-2024.\n\nProfessor Kris Warren from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University has worked in the field of wildlife\, zoological and conservation medicine for over 20 years. Staff and students in the Conservation Medicine Program undertake research on the health of threatened wildlife species within ecological contexts\, throughout Australia and internationally\, in order to assist recovery efforts to conserve these species. Professor Warren was appointed as a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine in the Specialty of Wildlife Population Health in 2011\, and as a Member of the Zoological Parks Authority Board for Perth Zoo in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park Cemetery\, then over to Craigie Bushland \nBring: Headtorch (torch is ok)\, Mossie Repellent\, Snacks & water\, Enclosed Shoes \nMeet at 5pm at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park Cemetery off Whitfords Ave to see the many kangaroos that live within the grounds. \nPark by the lake (first turn off roundabout then first left – directions in link). \n \nWe will watch the plentiful Western grey kangaroos before moving the cars over to Craigie Bushland (Google Maps Location) which is encompassed by a predator proof fence. \nWe will move cars to \nCraigie Bushland is found just off Whitfords Ave\, Craigie behind the Craigie Leisure Centre and managed by the City of Joondalup. \nThe reserve encompasses 56ha\, of which 42ha has a predator free fence. The fence was put up in 2010 and 3 years later 43 Quenda (Isoodon fusciventer) were reintroduced to the reserve.  We will walk on mostly level gravel tracks by night for around an hour. \n \n  \nSee my blog of one of my previous visits – Ry’s blog \nWe should see plenty of wolf spiders\, other night time critters and hopefully Quenda & Brush tailed possums.  I will have a thermal camera and bat detector as well. \n  \nContact Ry ryber1@gmail.com or 0439994338 if needed.

SUMMARY:Ollie Worrell Reserve\, High Wycombe  "Sit and stand bird watching excursion and bird photography mentoring"
DESCRIPTION:DRB Excursion: Leaders\, renowned Naturalists Rachel and Mike Green \nOllie Worrell Reserve in High Wycombe has a permanent standing lake with many bird species. E-bird has recorded 84 species of birds there. Our excursion leaders\, Mike and Rachel\, have been visiting the reserve regularly since November 2024 and have been impressed with the different bird species they have seen. There are even two birds on the E-bird list they have never seen anywhere. They have seen a Reed Warbler’s nest with chicks\, Dusky Moorhen with chicks\, a Great Cormorant\, a group of Hardheads\, Musk Ducks\, a Darter and several other birds of interest. \nThe opportunity to walk around the lake is limited\, but some seats are supplied\, and they are excellent places to observe the lake\, the island\, and the extensive reeds. People can also bring their own chairs. It is near Abernethy Road\, so traffic can be noisy\, but on the opposite side of the lake\, where we will predominantly be focused\, it is quieter. \nThis excursion will be ideal for beginner bird-watchers and those with moderate experience. Mike is an experienced bird watcher and will provide help with bird identification and sightings. Rachel is an amateur bird photographer and will be available to help people learn some extra techniques for bird photography. This will be ideal for bird photography beginners or those amateurs who want to improve the bird pictures they get. It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have. \nThere is a flat concrete path around the best part of the lake\, providing access for those with walkers\, wheelchairs\, disabilities\, etc. \nPlease note that there are no facilities\, and car parking is available at Mathew Gibney Catholic School next door or on Worrell Avenue. We will meet at the oval entrance next to the Worrell Avenue reserve\, off Abernethy Road. \nWe anticipate having several visitors from Mike’s bird workshops attending from the local area. \nBring your binoculars. Watch out for the Weather and wear suitable clothing and shoes.\n\n9.30 am – 11 am.

His expertise is adaptations of Mediterranean floras to fire\, poor soils\, drought\, herbivores and pollinators. Byron has published 420 papers since 1972\, currently cited 35\,000 times. He became a Member of the Order of Australia for services to botany in 2010. Since retirement in 2010\, Byron has published 115 papers\, and a book on the SW Australian flora (Groom and Lamont 2015\, de Gruyter Open). Byron is a regular speaker and excursion leader for naturalist and mature-age learning groups and occasional international conferences. \n\n\n\nThe Serventy Memorial Fund is a memorial to the contribution by the Serventy family to the Western Australian Naturalists’ Club\, with the aim of assisting and encouraging young people in the study of natural history. SUMMARY:Railway Track Walk Glen Forrest to Darlington
DESCRIPTION:Our apologies this event has been cancelled due to low attendance \nWe previously arranged this event in 2023 and had to cancel due to extreme hot weather\, hoping earlier in the year  will be fine! \nMeet at Morgan John Morgan Reserve Glen Forrest  9.30am  include time for café or cuppa before walk back ( 6 km in total). or arrange a pick up. It follows the original Eastern Railway Stage 2 route \nHistory of the railway and today’s wildflowers and wildlife**  Construction of this Stage 2 of the Eastern Railway commenced in 1882 and was completed in 1884. The builder was J.W. Wright\, assisted by Edward Keane. This route ran from Guildford to Chidlow’s Well via Darlington and Glen Forrest. All the work was done by manual labour and the evidence of blast marks and drill holes can still be seen along the line. During the construction\, pipe clay was encountered at the big cutting later called the ‘Devils Terror’. This required a deviation of the line and the re-routing of Nyaania Creek south of the new alignment. This work added additional costs and time to the project. The inclines on this line were too great for heavy railway loads and an alternative railway route was added via Swan View/Hovea/Parkerville. This latter section became the main line around a decade later with passenger services being carried by both. The Darlington/Glen Forrest railway section closed in Jan 1954\, due to falling revenue\,. \n** courtesy Darlington History Group Inc

DESCRIPTION:DRB is heading out of the hills to hold a field trip in Yanchep National Park. \nWe are holding this member field trip as part of our 50th anniversary events.   Despite the sandy soils\, Yanchep’s coastal woodlands support a diverse range of trees including banksia\, tuart\, marri\, stunted jarrah\, sheoak and small pockets of paperbark. During spring\, many native flora species including kangaroo paws and catspaws are in flower. \nShelley Campbell will share her knowledge of orchids and will lead the group along the 2.6 km Woodlands Walk trail\, a Class 2 trail (see pdf). \nVisitors and members are invited to explore the trail with Shelley\, finding and identifying some of our fabulous spring orchids. \nThere is a daily fee of $17 per vehicle to enter Yanchep NP\, or you can purchase a Yanchep NP annual park pass online \nPark Pass\nfor $30 to give you free entry to Yanchep NP for a year. \nDetails of meeting point to be confirmed on booking. SUMMARY:William Henry Harvey and his Western Australian Seaweeds
DESCRIPTION:Dr John Huisman \nThis talk at the main club evening will feature  Dr John Huisman sharing about William Henry Harvey and his Western Australian Seaweeds. \nJohn’s presentation will give a general overview of the history and current state of seaweed diversity in the Perth region\, but then concentrate on his efforts to clarify the identities of several species that were described by Irish botanist William Henry Harvey in 1855\, but since that time have defied attempts to place them in appropriate genera. \nDr Huisman is the Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium (Department of Biodiversity\, Conservation and Attractions) and also undertakes taxonomic research into the Western Australian marine plants. Other than a two year sojourn to the Hawaiian Islands\, he has pursued a goal of a State-wide marine Flora since moving to Western Australia in 1985. John has written ten books and over 230 articles and chapters describing various seaweed related topics\, including the recent pictorial guide\, ‘Marine Plants of Australia (revised and updated)’ in 2023\, which depicts over 640 species\, mostly photographed in situ. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:DRB is Meeting Friends of Greater Brixton Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Bush Forever Site 387 – Greater Brixton Street Wetlands\, Kenwick. Meet at end of Alton Street\,  Kenwick 830 for 9am start \nWhile the wetlands only cover 19 hectares\, they contain many different vegetated wetlands with fringing vegetation in or near to the original condition\, support an outstanding flora diversity with at least 518 native taxa and comprising a third of the taxa recorded on the Swan Coastal Plain.  This includes many plant communities that are rare or endangered and in need of species protection. This protected area/bushland management boundary of bushland within the boundaries of the Site are not accurately mapped. Areas of bushland within the boundaries of the Site have been recently cleared. \nThe Wetlands support over 80 special wildflowers that are either rare and endangered; or have only recently been discovered by botanists; or are uncommon on the Swan Coastal Plain. They are also habitat for the Quenda (Southern Brown Bandicoot)\, waterbirds and many native terrestrial and aquatic animals as well as for endangered Carnaby’s Black Cocktoos. \nBrixton Street Wetlands are accessed via Brixton Street and Alton Street\, with the main entry and site lookout off Alton Street where we will connect to hear the work of the friends group

SUMMARY:Main Club Excursion to Chittering
DESCRIPTION:There are a number of walks that set off around the Peace be Still guest house  1324 Chittering Rd\, Lower Chittering WA 6084 \nPeace Be Still is situated on a farm with bushland adjoining the Avon Valley National Park allowing access for extensive bushwalking. A lovely picnic and camping area on the banks of the Brockman River provides an opportunity to get away from the city and to enjoy this natural bushland setting. \nYou can come for the day or stay overnight at a cost of $150 inc. accommodation\, breakfast \, evening meal  and Lunch \nDjidi-Djidi Ridge is named after the Noongar word for Willy Wagtail\, a much loved native Australian bird that can be found in the Chittering region. The hidden walk trail on this reserve is seasonally abundant in natural gems. SUMMARY:Lake Leschenaultia Forest Walk
DESCRIPTION:Lake Leschenaultia\, Western Australia is a former railway dam that is now a recreational lake in the Shire of Mundaring just north of the location of an important railway stopping place on the original Eastern Railway. There are number of walks we can take\, however the one we take that skirts the eastern side of the forest offered a variety of flora & trees. We meet at the second car park opposite the pergola\, there is an entrance to the trail leading away from the Bike trails on the left handside of the road. Look for DRB signs. Enclosed shoes please ; bring a picnic for after the walk.
