SUMMARY:MYGALOMORPH SPIDERS (TRAPDOORS AND THEIR RELATIVES)
DESCRIPTION:Note we are back to meeting on the third Wednesday of the month for the rest of the year. \nOur speaker Jeremy Wilson is a Postdoctoral Researcher working on trapdoor spiders at UWA and WAM. \nJeremy’s presentation will examine the evolution of the burrowing behaviour in mygalomorph spiders (trapdoors and their relatives). During the talk he will discuss the  various burrow types constructed by mygalomorph spiders (highlighting examples from WA)\, compare them to examples worldwide to illustrate convergent evolution\, and explore how this broad evolutionary pattern has impacted taxonomy and systematics in the Mygalomorphae. Jeremy has indicated the talk will be WA-focused as possible with lots of relevant examples. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn more about trapdoor spiders and to acknowledge the pioneering work of our late patron\, Barbara York Main. \n(Photo: WA Museum)

SUMMARY:FROM WASTE TO WONDER - NSB MEETING
DESCRIPTION:  \nPhoto. Brisbane Insects \nLuke Wheat\, CEO and Founder of WA company Arvela will be our guest speaker. \nArvela is a Western Australian owned and operated biological services business\, specifically focused on the supply of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae to organic waste management companies around Australia.   Arvela believe insects have a critical role in helping humanity solve some of its most pressing environmental challenges\, and paving the way to a more sustainable\, climate friendly\, future. \nThe Black Soldier Fly is an introduced species to Australia\, endemic to the south-eastern part of the United States. It is not recognised as a pest because the adult is not attracted to human habitation or foods\, they are also non-biting and non-invasive. \nDon’t be a fly-on-the-wall\, come and find out how Black Soldier Fly farming can be used to convert food waste to commercially viable protein.

SUMMARY:Spider Webs\, Nature’s eDNA Trap
DESCRIPTION:Josh Newton (PhD Candidate\, Curtin University TrEnD Laboratory) \n“Spider webs are not just beautiful\, they could be our secret weapon to better understanding nature” \nDiscover how spider webs can serve as a tool for monitoring elephants and kangaroos. This talk will explore how spider webs can capture environmental DNA (eDNA) from vertebrates in terrestrial environments. Research conducted across two locations in Western Australia including Perth Zoo\, successfully detected the DNA from a wide range of species\, demonstrating the potential of spider webs as a cost-effective method for vertebrate biodiversity monitoring. \n \nPhoto: Curtin University

SUMMARY:NSB JUNE GOLLY WALK: WHITFORDS NODES
DESCRIPTION:The excursion to the Department of Fisheries planned as a follow-up to our May and June speakers’ presentations has been postponed. Instead\, we will  meet at the western end of the Whitfords Nodes car park and take a short walk ( about 300m) along the beach\, then on the path along the eastern side of the primary dune before  winding our way through the bush to the top of the lookout for splendid views along the coast and of the nearby osprey’s nest. A much faster descent down the steps will take us to the lawn area before we return to our vehicles. All up about 2km. Bring morning tea. (Image: Emerge Associates)

SUMMARY:NSB JUNE MEETING: ABALONE
DESCRIPTION:Dr Lachlan Strain\, Principal Research Scientist- Molluscs\, DPIRD \nWe will learn about the species\, habitat and life cycle of the various abalone species that are found along WA’s coast line. We will also learn how researchers collect data and make recommendations for the following season. The 2024 recreational abalone season closed on Saturday 9 March. Was it a good one? How many licences were issued? Is it sustainable? \nCome along and find out the answers to these questions and ask some of your own. \n
