SUMMARY:Climate Change: from the Atlas to Alaska (NSB)
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Mike Norman \n  \nA double-header. Our two speakers have recently returned from two very different journeys in two very different parts of the world. However\, what they both witnessed was strikingly similar\, the effects of climate change. \nMike Norman\, a long standing bushland and coastcare coordinator\, travelled to Europe again after mountain climbing/ hiking in Italy\, Switzerland and France there with his Polish friends 25 years ago. His observations further confirmed the changes being caused by global warming\, and he considers where we are most likely heading. \nPeter Stephenson\, retired Principal Research Scientist at the WA Department of Fisheries and now a consultant on commercial fish populations\, was commissioned to study the dramatic change in fish stock in Alaskan waters. What he found\, even astounded him.

SUMMARY:Diversity and mating behaviour of the Australian wishbone spiders (genus Aname) in the Northern Jarrah Forest (NSB)
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Andrea Piccinini \n  \nAndrea Piccinini  (PhD Candidate\, UWA). \nThe wishbone spiders of the genus Aname are highly diverse mygalomorph spiders\, with an extremely widespread distribution across mainland Australia. Andrea’s project focused on addressing the taxonomic knowledge shortfall on this group in the Northern Jarrah Forest subregion\, and providing insights on mating behaviour and the influence of sexual selection on these spiders. Six new species have already been described for the area (with many more to come)\, and a remarkable mating system – especially regarding post-copulation behaviours – has been revealed.
