Deceased member of the Naturalists’ Bushwalking Group, Katsu Young, made a generous bequest to the Bushwalking Group in 2017. With Katsu’s blessing, part of the bequest was to be used to create a memorial to Alan Notley (1928-2016), who founded the Bushwalking Group more than forty years ago.
The Old Nursery Park in Yanchep was chosen as an appropriate location for such a memorial, as this had previously been the site of the native-plant nursery associated with the development of Yanchep Sun City by Bond Corporation, later bought by Tokyu, a Japanese company. Alan established and managed this nursery from its outset until he retired.
On Sunday October 6, after a lunch at the Yanchep Inn, around 40 past and present members of the Bushwalking Group and the Naturalists’ Club attended the unveiling of a memorial seat and plaque in the park. The event lead to Alan’s widow Johanna, family and many members telling both serious and humorous stories about Alan’s life and his contribution to both
the Bushwalkers Group and Nats stretching from the early 1950s, when he first joined the Club, to just before his death in 2016.
The seat, which was provided and installed by the City of Wanneroo—and its location—are a fitting tribute to Alan.
We thank Johanna and Lutz Elber for negotiating with the City of Wanneroo and for arranging the event.
