Future Direction Workshop – Steering Group

The morning session will be followed by an afternoon session when a steering group, comprising elected Club representatives, will gather with Jo to tease out important issues and ideas raised by both the survey and the morning’s workshop. Three weeks later the same steering group will meet with Jo to fine-tune the project. Jo will gather all our ideas and plans and use these to write and present the Future Plan for 2015-19 to the Club in September/October.

       Speaker:    Mike Lohr, Murdoch University As part of his PhD research, Mike is studying a number of factors that may be causing declines in Southern Boobooks (sometimes known as Mopokes) across Australia. Boobooks are often killed or injured in collisions with vehicles and windows.  He has been investigating some possible causes (like the disease toxoplasmosis and certain pesticides found in rat poison) that may be increasing the likelihood of vehicle strikes.

Meteorite Impacts in Western Australia

Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter in the asteroid belt are over a million asteroids. This is after 4.5 billion years of existence of our solar system. Merely an indication of what the early system consisted of – perhaps hundreds of millions of asteroids? But through time the gravitational pull of the planets has cleaned up most. But there are still a few and every now and then a collision between two in the asteroid can deflect one into an earth-crossing orbit! Together with our speaker tonight, Mike Freeman, we will look at some existing craters and evidence for some very old sites where the crater was eroded long ago.

The Red-necked Stint is the smallest of 36 migratory species that fly 25,000 kilometres every year from Australia to breeding grounds in the Arctic Circle.
