Reminiscing about Perth’s bushland

Hew Roberts LT Nedlands Lecture Theatre, Clifton St., Nedlands

Alex George will reminisce about Perth’s urban bushland, from his wanderings in the 1940s around Melville, Swanbourne, Jandakot, Boya and other places, through changes he has seen, to the present day.  He will intertwine thoughts on its richness, the history of its discovery, what we have lost, what we still have, some challenges facing further survival.  The talk will be illustrated with colour slides of bush lost, bush surviving, and a selection of wildflowers.

Meet:              Floreat Surf Life Saving Club Car Park.  One entrance is on West Coast Hwy first on the right after The Boulevard (coming from the north). A second, from Challenger Parade, just after the West Coast Hwy (also from coming from the north) .

Details:           An easy walk on stunning beach and some paths.

Wear clothes appropriate to the weather (i.e. hat / rainwear) and suitable footwear. Bring morning tea and drinking water.   There is a Kiosk and a cafe at the meeting point where we finish our walk.

As a nature nerd with a lifelong passion for just about anything to do with the environment, one of the best ways I’ve found for discovering new and interesting things is to go spotlighting, that is, going out at night with a torch and seeing what you can find. The bush is a totally different place at night, and there is a whole host of new and interesting things to be found, some of which I’ll be running through in February.

DRB Presents: Kailah Thorn (WA Museum) talking about Fossil Vertebrates of the Swan Coastal Plain

Western Australian vertebrate palaeontology has had a slow and bumpy ride from the first staggered descriptions in the early 1900s, to the world famous Nullarbor cave megafauna discoveries at the turn of the century. All these discoveries would not have been possible without members of the public pointing out ‘large bones’ or ‘giant footprints’ to museum or university scientists. The Swan Coastal Plain has several fossil deposits detailing the past faunal diversity of Perth and surrounds, stretching from Jurien Bay to Rottnest Island.
This talk will cover how the public can collect fossils responsibly (permits, safety etc.), where locals may find ‘subfossils’ in the Perth hills, some of the basics for identifying native animal bones, and where to send the ‘weird’ ones.
