Photo Competition and AGM for NS Branch

20 December 2023

As usual, there was no speaker at the December Meeting of the Northern Suburbs Branch. Instead, the Annual General Meeting was held before our End-of-Year Photo Competition.

Office Bearers for 2024 are:

  • Chairman: Willy Dadour
  • Secretary: Don Poynton
  • Treasurer: Joy Chela
  • Committee: Jenny Cunningham, Christine Curry OAM, Sylvia Tetlow, Graham Ezzy and Paul Lambert

During his This Month Naturally segment, Don Poynton told us about the distribution, characteristics, and habitat of Melaleuca lanceolata, which he had encountered on recent walks in Victoria. In Western Australia, it is commonly known as Rottnest Island Teatree or Moonah, the latter being the indigenous name used in the south-eastern parts of Australia. The plant was first described in 1820 in a German publication listing the rare plants around Berlin.

As a follow-on to Coming Events, Sylvia Tetlow introduced, then showed, the recently digitized version of the film made 50 years ago showing members of the Naturalists Club removing weed from Tomato Lake in Kewdale as the Club’s 50th-anniversary conservation project. The Tomato Lake Revisited event will be held on Sunday morning, 7 April 2024, to launch the Club’s Centenary.

Graham Ezzy ran the photo competition. This year, there were prizes for four categories. The categories and winners were:
