Whole Club, 13 July 2024
100 members and guests gathered to share in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Club. Displays of the 50th anniversary of Tomato Lake clearing, and pictures of club history were shown as guests enjoyed pre-lunch drinks. Mike and Mandy Bamford were tasked with keeping everything on track as hosts. Our Patrons, Professor Lyn Beazley AO, FAA, FTSE, and Hon. Kerry Sanderson, AC, CVO, opened the event, sharing the historical and natural elements to engage the audience.
It was pleasing to have so many invited guests accept the invitation. Hon. Darren West, MLC (representing Minister for Energy, Environment, Climate Action, Reece Whitby) gave a speech. Mr Alec Coles, OBE, FRSA, CEO of Western Australia Museum, and Mr David van Ooran, Executive Director of Perth Zoo, attended the event. We were able to locate members of the Serventy family, Astrid Serventy, Julian, and Lesley Russell. Mr Neville Collard spoke of the place, nature, and longevity of those around us during his welcome to the country. And Prof. Kevin Kenneally gave an account of the historical achievements.
Branch and club members spoke, Mike Griffiths (DRB), Steve Lofthouse (Main Club), Jolanda Keeble (Main Club), Marilyn Zakrevsky (NSB), and Colin Prickett (KRMB), about the achievements and specialities. A special presentation was given to Mr Len McKenna on his achievement of reaching 100 years. Elaine Davison was asked to accept a certificate and small gift that included one of the earliest journals in recognition of her work as Editor. A few members spoke of places and times of interest to them as the lunch came to an end.
WA Naturalists’ Club President Steven Lofthouse gave the vote of thanks to the speakers, Pam Ghirardi (photography), Diana Papanfus (decorations and special table specimens), and Arlene Quinn as event coordinator. Members and guests enjoyed the connections and reminiscing on the day, resulting in many exchanges of news and future plans.
The audience enjoyed the luncheon menu, and special diets were admirably catered for by the University of Western Australia Club staff.
