Bushwalk and Members Meeting

On the bush walk at star swamp we spotted and learned about some native plants. It was interesting especially tapping the puff balls to see if the spores came out. We liked the bird and frog noises on the tape and enjoyed guessing them. The show and tell was fun and the afternoon tea was delicious. We liked playing on the big old tree which had fallen down.

Maddy and Rebecca

On our short bushwalk we were lucky enough to have an expert on fungi with us – Maddy and Rebecca’s dad, Neale Bougher. He showed us lots of interesting cap fungi, puffballs and bracket fungi, and even some jelly fungi, and we made a spore print of one. The fungi we see are just the fruiting bodies, and the main part of the fungus is the mass of threads that run through the ground (the mycelium). We found lots of wildflowers including Hardenbergia, Scarlet Runner, Hibbertia and some different species of wattle or Acacia.

Back at the Centre, after a hot drink and a biscuit, we had a quiz on bird calls and frog calls. Then it was show-and-tell time, and we saw lots of fossils, shells and even some brine shrimps that people had brought in. Congratulations to all those children who brought items in to show. That made it very interesting.
