Whitford Nodes

Northern Suburbs Branch, GOLLY Walk – 26 June 2024

Sharon McArthur from Friends of Hillarys-Kallaroo Foreshore joined eight NSB members for a walk along the beach area at Whitfords Nodes. The weather was against us, but we wandered along the beachfront between showers and viewed the local osprey that has a nest on the communication tower at the car park.

Recent rains had filled the freshwater wetland at the southern end of the area and refreshed the bushland. We made our way up to the first lookout overlooking Hillary’s boat harbour, noting quandongs (Santalum acuminatum) with young fruit. The only flowering shrub we noted was the Prickle Lily (Acanthocarpus preissii). Sharon took us past a number of revegetation areas and explained they have regular weeding and planting days at this time of the year.

We then made our way up to the “exercise stairway that extends to a height of 22m up the dune landscape and has 145 steps to climb with rest stops along the way”.
The sun came out at the end of our walk, and we all enjoyed a morning tea in the park.
